Does anyone still think the old time heavyweights were too small to be competitive in the modern era?

    How dare you?

Tate was a stone-cold legend, feared throughout hill and dale.

The tales of his deeds left soft whispers in the depths of the night to frighten children and adults alike.

Most men fall onto a cold sweat even at the mention of his forbidden name.

Talk about rose - coloured glasses.
You don’t think Bill Tate could jab, jab grab?

Well he lost 20 of his 54 fights and was ko'd 11 times so I'd suggest he wasn't very good at it!

I mean he did get DQ'd for holding against Langford, so you know he's got the "grab" part down. For real though, what an interesting career and something indicative of the time- especially for Black fighters:

-HIs first pro fight of record (at least nowadays I know he had many that weren't tracked) he gets KO'd by a HOFer, who was fighting his second fight of the day.

-Nearly 20% of his pro fights of record were against Sam Langford, granted a mostly old, blind and shopworn Langford, but still.

-He fought Wills 5 times in a year, including two fights in a 4 day span

-His 1915 saw him go 4-3-1 (with an additional no contest). Starting the year with another fight against Jeanette (HOFer) but also losing to 5'6" Silas Green (take that size matters people). He had three fights that summer against fighters who all would end their careers with losing records, including a no contest for inactivity.

            Crazy times.

Bill Tate was garbage you RETARD!

How could you possibly think this was a good argument to make?

Who are you comparing Bill Tate to?

I find the underlined eliminates unpleasant arguments.

Big men were not unknown in any era.
Big men with both skills and movement were.
That's what a lot of people don't seem to realize, it's not just the numbers. It's about having the skills along with the size that changes things. These big guys Louis fought for example were so sluggish and uncoordinated, they couldn't even absorb and apply the amazing technique that boxing gyms were providing at that time.

How many good big men did we really see pre-80s and 90s? Willard looked good in the Johnson fight, Terrell looked good untill he ran into Clay..I mean Ali. I can't really think of many others with those dimensions who were impressive.
