Does anyone still think the old time heavyweights were too small to be competitive in the modern era?

He wasn't a highly-trained modern athlete with all the "medicine" that today's fighters have.

If he was, he'd be a lot bigger also.

Yeah, the names Buddy Baer, Abe Simon, and Primo Carnera just oozes pound for pound skills. They would be low grade dog meat today.

Great photo. Usually the men who had the nickname "giant" had a size that holds up even today. Him and Jeffries, certainly Sonny Liston. Though only around 6'1, Fighters with thick legs, huge frames and other attributes like large fists, long arms etc. and they did not rely on foot speed so much.

        Here's another good shot:

He was very lean but came in around 210 at times I believe.

I disagree. Carnea had no punch, yes, but he could box.

His size and boxing skills would have made him a difficult opponent for Fury.

He is an overly maligned fighter; better than the political side of boxing history wants to admit.

I mean they would not be in the top ten rankings in modren times. If they were they would of the top ten raninkgs in a fight or two.

              Give Abe Simon some respect.

When the War Department and the IRS in 1942, tried to get Louis out his tax debt (which didn't work), they needed an opponent for the newly inducted Louis to beat-up in a Navy War Relief Championship charity fight. There were no comers; there would be no purse.

Abe Simon, who had already been beaten-up by Louis just a year earlier, (L 13/15 TKO, suffering four KDs but still finished on his feet, a beaten man), stepped up and took the second fight at the last moment. No purse.

This time he gave it six good rounds and got off the floor twice to keep fighting. Again he had to be saved by the referee because he wouldn't stay down. (L 6/15 TKO).

              Did I mention, no purse?

He did it for the war effort, he did it for Joe Louis.

How many of the of "low grade dog meat" fighters today would do the same?

Really I ask you, how many of today's fighters would do that?

Don't call these old men 'dogs' because their resume doesn't impress you. There is more to a man than his statistics.

An easy thing to say, but a difficult thing to prove.

I didn't know Simon fought for nothing, good info. Buddy Baer, donated a percentage of his purse too. Calling those brave men "dog meat,"does leave a bad taste in the mouth.

That was taken from when he was in camp, in training to fight, and taken from an interview with Charley Goldman.
Ive read every Marciano book under the sun and have yet to read all Marciano did was run a few miles to prepare for his fights. Where are you accessing this info? Why was his stamina so good for a dude that barely runs?

Do I have to dig up alternative sources for Marcianos training regimen?

I run more than 5 miles a day for f sake.

I love how his source is some copy and paste media clipping on a forum. And a training regimen more basic than someone who started boxing a year ago.
