    One fight per week…

I thought this would be best section left of boxing scene and I hope I get some good recommendations.

Long story short, my spouse came up to me on Monday and said she wanted to get into the routine of us (me and her…not YOU guys) watching one boxing match per week chosen by me with the following caveats:

1-) Has to be an entertaining fight…boxing is subjective but I get the gist of it. Competitive fights.

2-) No Mayweather fights (fair enough). If you’re trying to show somebody strictly competitive [entertaining] fights, Mayweather wouldn’t qualify. Though admittedly he has two very very one-sided ass whoopings against Corrales and Gatti.

3-) That I give context before the fight. What was happening beforehand? Was there bad blood? Was it a highly anticipated match-up? What was happening on the landscape in the lead-up?

That’s the only criteria she established.

But I’m putting down a couple more:

    1. No Cotto/Trinidad/any PR fighter. They were extensively covered here in PR during the heyday and if I pick a Puerto Rican fighter, she’s going to be assuming I picked it because the Puerto Rican wins.

    2. No Deontay/Wilder fights. We actually watched their rubber match together live a few years ago. I’m tempted to show her the first fight because of Fury coming back from the dead but overall it’s not a super entertaining fight. A lot of good context though with Fury coming back after depression and alcoholism and inactivity…

I’m due this Friday to come up with the first fight and these are the ones I’m considering:

Corrales/Castillo 1- great, consistent action throughout. Amazing last minute turnaround. Reasons why I wouldn’t play it: the comeback is so well-documented to even non-boxing fans that I worry she might know the turnaround is coming as soon as Diego spits his mouthpiece out. Don’t know the backstory to this one (if there even was one).

Rios/Alvarado 1- I think this one has more exchanged leather and they’re both undefeated coming in. Bonn’s away for 7 rounds before it ends. Short and sweet.

Bradley-Provodnikov- fight of the year. Bradley had a huge chip on his shoulder because of the public lambasting following his dubious Pacquiao victory. What unfolds is a guy that can’t ****…continuously exchanging with a puncher and getting hurt multiple times in the process. A dramatic start and a dramatic finish. This to me for now is the lead candidate.

Does anybody have a go-to list to convert people into boxing fans if afforded the opportunity?

If she wants entertainment? Foreman Lyle, the Gatti Ward trilogy (any fight),

Those aren’t bad at all. If she hadn’t seen Wilder/Fury 3, I would seriously be considering this one. There’s A LOT of history and backstory leading into that rubber match (or even the first fight for that matter).

Joe Louis/Max Schmeling has serious historical implications. I forgot about that one.

I thought about Ali/Frazier 1 and 3 as well, but those (Ali really) are SO high profile that I’m almost certain she knows the outcomes of them in particular.

Ali/Foreman has a lot of historical context as well, but I don’t think it’s necessarily a riveting fight.

Bowe/Holyfield…I have to check which of the three is the best. I can’t be showing an entire trilogy. She’ll only have the patience for maybe one fight per week. Lol

Foreman/Lyle lol I’m reminded of Teddy Atlas in the Fight Night video games: “It’s like the elevator fight, up and down all night!”

Gatti-Ward 1 is a good choice. Good consistent action, a knockdown, fight of the year, AND a round of the year to boot.

Good. Watch it without looking up the result. Some of the best back and forth fighting you will ever see.

And you won't be able to predict the winner until well into the bout.

                  Don't look up the results.

You will see one of the greatest fights, prize fighting ever produced.

At one point they even try to stop the fight on a technical DQ but the champion would not have it and forced the fight to continue to a conclusion.

It is everything right about boxing. Even the s-tupid outsiders, commission, doctors, referee, seconds couldn't it screw up. The fighters would not let them.

Perfectly matched with opposing styles, both came to win and gave it their all. Both were masters of their craft and hard as coffin nails.

P.S. No, it wasn't an important fight, just a WBA Featherweight title at risk on a Saturday afternoon broadcast. Not the stuff casuals on boxing forums remember. It's a fight for fight fans, not star chasers.

Sanchez Nelson was a good technical match especially as Azuma was so inexperienced and took the fight on short notice.

The later prime Nelson was a beast.
