I thought this would be best section left of boxing scene and I hope I get some good recommendations.
Long story short, my spouse came up to me on Monday and said she wanted to get into the routine of us (me and her…not YOU guys) watching one boxing match per week chosen by me with the following caveats:
1-) Has to be an entertaining fight…boxing is subjective but I get the gist of it. Competitive fights.
2-) No Mayweather fights (fair enough). If you’re trying to show somebody strictly competitive [entertaining] fights, Mayweather wouldn’t qualify. Though admittedly he has two very very one-sided ass whoopings against Corrales and Gatti.
3-) That I give context before the fight. What was happening beforehand? Was there bad blood? Was it a highly anticipated match-up? What was happening on the landscape in the lead-up?
That’s the only criteria she established.
But I’m putting down a couple more:
1. No Cotto/Trinidad/any PR fighter. They were extensively covered here in PR during the heyday and if I pick a Puerto Rican fighter, she’s going to be assuming I picked it because the Puerto Rican wins.
2. No Deontay/Wilder fights. We actually watched their rubber match together live a few years ago. I’m tempted to show her the first fight because of Fury coming back from the dead but overall it’s not a super entertaining fight. A lot of good context though with Fury coming back after depression and alcoholism and inactivity…
I’m due this Friday to come up with the first fight and these are the ones I’m considering:
Corrales/Castillo 1- great, consistent action throughout. Amazing last minute turnaround. Reasons why I wouldn’t play it: the comeback is so well-documented to even non-boxing fans that I worry she might know the turnaround is coming as soon as Diego spits his mouthpiece out. Don’t know the backstory to this one (if there even was one).
Rios/Alvarado 1- I think this one has more exchanged leather and they’re both undefeated coming in. Bonn’s away for 7 rounds before it ends. Short and sweet.
Bradley-Provodnikov- fight of the year. Bradley had a huge chip on his shoulder because of the public lambasting following his dubious Pacquiao victory. What unfolds is a guy that can’t ****…continuously exchanging with a puncher and getting hurt multiple times in the process. A dramatic start and a dramatic finish. This to me for now is the lead candidate.
Does anybody have a go-to list to convert people into boxing fans if afforded the opportunity?
