    How great was Jack Dempsey?

Don't get me wrong i love Jack Dempsey. He is one of my idols. However part of me thinks he may have been abit overrated. His resume is poor. He ducked Langford and Greb and Greb was a middleweight. He never fought Harry Wills. He lost twice to Tunney. He was a very inactive champion. How do you guys rate Dempsey?

Pretty much **** on bro. I just agree with you.

A great champion, not a special magic man some folks claim.

Over and over again. The resume boys never understand that there is so much more to the fight game than just records.

        So here we are again.

        1. In 1922-23 no one would promote the Wills fight.

        2. No Greb promoter ever came close to meeting Kearns asking price.

Same old, same old history lite needs to be debunked.

        Can't we create a sticky?

If you noticed, I ignored and stayed a mile away from this. Only so many times we can rehash everything in one calender year. Id say this would be at least the 4th or 5th in the last 12 months.

Yeah, I'm very fond of Dempsey, but I just can't go through it all again. I had to argue the same sh it over and over again back in the day and I don't have the desire or any energy to do it all over yet again.

you guys need to find the energy to discuss this one final time. Dempsey ducked Langford in 1916. He ducked Greb for years after having sparred with him in 1920. He would have lost to both.

John Lennon said, "Whatever gets you through the night, it's alright."

                Believe what works for you.

Im sure there are many here who are more knowledgeable about this than I am. But didnt Dempsey begin his pro career until November of 1914?

If so, then I dont know if you could really hold a "duck" against him in 1916, roughly a year and a half into his career. He was just getting started, Langford was established. No reason to fight him, cant see it as a duck

                    It's like a catch 22 bro.

100% understand you and 100% agree with you

But consider this, or maybe you have and have a ready answer:

Langford himself, I'm pretty sure I was informed by Jab so Jabster, correct me if I make a fool of myself.

Anyway, Langford was like 17 or some such similar nonsense when he said anyone but Jeffries.

Dempsey was likewise just green when he said anyone but Sam.

It isn't hard to guess who these young men looked up to.

What might be hard is respecting that respect; not everyone is Rocky Marciano and Leon Spinks, not everyone would crush the man they loved as champion in their youth. We do have things to cite for this as well. Like Nonpariel forcing Fitzsimmons to beat the shiz out of him. It isn't speculation like Tyson/Wlad could be, these things happened.

So there might be an honesty to it that goes beyond prime or not. Like how k2 won't fight. Fair to say either way it's a very forgivable ducking.
