It's about time HBO made this move. But why would they inisist on Canelo next instead of GGG, the #1 contender to cotto's title?

GGG must be pissed off.

They already know that if he fights GGG, it will happen on HBO so no need to put pressure for that. They also know there is very little chance that Cotto will fight GGG and will be stripped of his title after his voluntary. Without a title, the only financially viable fight for Cotto will be against Canelo.

The Canelo/Cotto fight should had been happening in May or June. That fight needs to happen this year. It is not going to get any bigger. Hopefully both guys win their next fight and the next fight will be against themselves.

In fact, the purse guarantee may be the difference here. There was a good chance Cotto-Canelo and Floyd-Cotto would have pulled similar numbers.

Floyd-Cotto would not have pulled any higher than Floyd-Maidana's 800k-900k especially if there was some backlash.

No, I disagree with you. I disagree with that as well. I think Floyd/cotto draws much more. Canelo is not as popular with the US ppv audience as floyd is. but there is no way to prove either true or false.

I don't think Floyd going for the MW title against cotto, a guy he did 1.5 mil ppv's with would drop 600k in sales either. That's a 40% drop.

I think a fair estimate is 20-25% drop-from 1.5 mil to between 1 mil and 1.2 mil ppv sales. I don' think cotto/ canelo sells that much.

Maybe. My guess is HBO made the deal with Canelo to get him from SHowtime-we'll get you the cotto fight first and you can wait GGG out.

I would think given the way HBO has marketed GGG and keeps stating he is the best MW, they would force him into a title shot, especially given what the WBC did by making him the mando.

No need to force him into a title fight. It has already been mandated by WBC and if Cotto refuses, he will be stripped. HBO has no say in that at all.

If I'm GGG, watching them work to get Canelo the fight before me would really piss me off as this is the stance I've been arguing HBO needs to take on behalf of GGG with both cotto and canelo.

I guess waiting to vacate makes sense, but then the lineage is vacated unless GGG fights Quillin, which appears difficult.

Why would GGG need to fight Quillin to re-establish the lineage? If he loses against Lee, he doesn't figure at all.

I wonder what Roc Nations take on all of this is. Surely they want a return on their $50mil investment and they wont get that with Cotto fighting guys like K9Bundrage. I'm sure that they will be pushing for a Canelo showdown as well.
