Wilder is another high profile guy with a padded record. The emphasis on retaining the "0" is a massive factor in this.

SRR was larger than hatton but yeah hatton was overrated during his career but really he isnt rated high as an ATG, he got hyped at 140 but people realize he had massive weight cuts and was a dud at 147 when he didnt have a weight advantage. So I think historically hatton will be rated fairly after his career ended which is the only time you can make a full assessment of someone.

Wilder, is what he is but realistically there are only a handful of guys he didnt fight that he could of so that isnt a padded record at all. Compare him to the 1950s era he was still fighting ranked guys and still fighting guys who box full time. If you look at marciano's record, go look at his first 40 fights and compare him to wilder, marciano was fighting journey men, farmers, factory workers, welders ect. Its not even on the same planet. And wilder will get his due for the all time heavy rankings... Nobody is rating him top 20 or anything. THey will rate him when it comes to power and he proved that but I think he gets ranked fairly historically but the old era they hype those guys to the moon for their careers.

People make these throwaway comments like "he's a lock for top 5" all the time. Depends on the criteria. "Hate" is a ****** word too but I suppose it's too much to expect any nuance around Mayweather. One either worships him as a secular god or hates him.

He retired as the lineal and clear best welterweight in the world at 38 years old. None of the other guys can say that, none of them were on top for 17 years straight.

He wasn't on top for 17 years straight, he took a few retirements in there and was dropped from all rankings as a result of his break after the Hatton fight. He didn't fight Margarito, Williams or Cotto at 147 - those are some pretty big omissions.

Your problem is adoring skills. Everyone beats the crap out of SRR today but that wouldn't make SRR's legacy worse. Fighters should be ranked for their own time. SRR achieved every possibly thing at 147 and 160. He is #1 at WW and around #3 at MW in terms of legacy. He went LW to LHW. His style set up modern boxer-puncher style. His only loss was LaMotta at his WW prime. His only loss was Turpin at his MW prime. Then revenged it. His record was mostly padded but had some solid names. He beat 2x Angott, 2x Gavilan, Armstrong, Bell, Turpin, 5x LaMotta, Zivic, Fullmer and Basilio. Angott was #1 LW, Gavilan was #1 WW, Turpin and Fullmer were #1 MWs. All were solid fighters. Arguments for SRR are so strong but he ain't unrivaled on the top.

              Based on:

              1) His win-loss record
              2) The quality of the opponents he beat
              3) The film that is available
              4) The opinions of knowledgeable boxing people who saw him and saw those who came after

If fighting today, his resume would be respected maybe 5% as much as it is. Very poor let's be honest. Nash out

If fighting today he would be fighting twice a year and be promoted through social media. It's weird to hear people of this generation talk about "overrating" when the social media age is a huge celebration of mediocrity. There are people on this forum who say Tyson Fury is the greatest heavyweight of all time and mean it.

Wilder has the glaring omission of failing to fight Klitschko. That's unacceptable.

Wlad was 40 in 2015 and only fought once more after that.

So what if wilder didnt fight him he also isnt going to be put into the top 20 ATG of heavyweight or even the top 30. So that is accounted for in his rankings. But you got top 5 and top 10 ranked guys who fought a massive list of padded bums on their records.
