The idea of Tarver beating Calzaghe is probably the most weak an argument of the higher weight opponents Hopkins demolished.

I mean how does Antonio go from losing a wide wide UD to Hopkins to beating Calzaghe?

Does the style match up suite him?

Not massively. I find it very difficult to see how Tarver would KO Calzaghe, or keep up a varied, active, accurate enough game to win a decision.

I actually think Winky Wright or Taylor have the best chances against Joe but still lose very clearly. As for Kelly, well the hype of him beating Calzaghe finally fully extinguished when an apparent past it Hopkins dominated him. Funny that.

So what did Calzaghe do to qualify himself as an ATG in your opinion?

I disagree. I think Tarver would pose major, major problems for Calzaghe. Yeah, Hopkins handled him easy but Joe fights nothing like him. In fact, he's the anti-Hopkins.

Yeah but since Hopkins ain't all that, what was so big about what Joe did. Who was his best win then, Kessler? hehe

We've had this before but I would have put a decent wager on Calzaghe UD'ing Tarver, it's just one of those fights I'd have strong confidence in betting on and not without reason.

I know you think highly of Tarver and I respect that, but I think he's pretty over rated and was exposed by Hopkins as a little one dimensional at times, without the talent to face major adversity, adapt and win back loads of rounds.

He doesn't do anything majorly better than say Kessler does to win, in-fact he'd lose even more rounds in similarly confused state, behind the game plan and skill being applied on him. He just wouldn't react. Yes Hops & Joe are v. different but also much more talented fighters and Tarver's stlye suites Joe loads too. Tarvers just not a majorly and naturally 'talented' fighter in my book.

Unless Hopkins loses to Jones should they meet next year......No,you're right, its utterly pointless!

He doesn't do anything majorly better than say Kessler does to win, in-face he'd lose even clearer imo even at LHW. Just not a majorly and naturally 'talented' fighter in my book.
That's interesting. I think he does better than Kess, mainly because I think he's a much better fighter than Kess with a much better resume to boot. Anyone who can simultaneously outwork and outbox Glen Johnson is nothing to scoff at. As far as being exposed by Hopkins, I don't think that's the right word. I fully expected Hopkins to drub him. Styles make fights and I'm not sure how Hopkins style has anything to do with Calzaghe's.

Tarvers resume largely beating Roy (but still also losing to him) is what made him imo, and I find that very thing of his resume to be over rated as well. He caught some guys at the right time, just not Hopkins. The Johnson that faced Dawson was an animal and would've been slightly more competitive with Tarver than previous. Dawson does now clearly beat both.

So essentially I agree with how the rankings have shaped out, and how they would be if Joe was up there still, they'd be in perfect order.

Tarver does not respond well when he can't bulleye his man with combinations, when his opponent moves cleverly, isn't fazed, and throws more punches back at him without slowing down or giving way. He's just not quite on that level to raise his game.
