A war of words broke out between Mosley/Hopkins and Mayweather. [details]

How many fights did JMM have at Welterweight before he fought Mayweather? And why would Shane fight a no-namer if he hadn't tasted at least a 2-3 million dollar payday? What Shane did is like going up to 168 and fighting Kessler instead of Berto.

He can and should fight both Mosley and the Cotto-Pac winner, and given that Cotto-Pac won't happen until November, it makes sense from every imaginable point of view for him to fight Mosley first.

        1) Mosley is available before the Cotto Pac winner.

        2) Mosley-Mayweather would be for The Ring belt and the lineal title, because they are currently ranked #1 and #2. Then the winner vs. the Pac-Cotto winner would be for all the marbles, and would be the biggest fight since Hagler-Hearns. Fighting them in the opposite order doesn't make nearly as much sense in terms of divisional clarity, or commercially.

        3) The Mosley fight would be far easier to negotiate. Mosley won't make big demands in terms of percentages, he just wants to make the fight.

If they ever negotiate to fight each other, I also hope HBO doesn't do anything to screw it up and force a Pacquiao-Mayweather fight on us just because it is a bigger money fight. I understand the casual fan is interested in that fight, but it doesn't do anything for me because the Mosley fight is for the linear title even though it shouldn't be because Cotto should be ranked at #2 instead. And I've also got my doubts about Pacquiao getting past Cotto. I thought Pacquiao would win a couple weeks ago. But after witnessing the Mayweather-JMM fight, it changed my opinion.

Boldomir was the lineal champ. It's silly to criticise Mayweather for fighting the lineal champ. But he should have defended his title against top Welters after he'd won it, and he didn't. That's what you should criticise, not the fact he fought a weak lineal champion.

Baldomir has been mentioned as a Margarito opponent. What does that tell you about who the more dangerous fighter was?

actually they had 4 chances to fight but De la hoya screwed it up on purpose because he wanted to be the first person to defeat floyd but we know how that turned out.then mosley was obligated to give vargas a rematch. i see pbf fighting cotto or pac then retiring for good.

If you have watched boxing before the last couple of years you would have known who FMJ was at that time. I'm not faulting SSM, but why should Floyd stop his gravy train now? I understand posters want to see FMJ lose and feel SSM is the person to do it but ya'll are going to have to wait because NOW Shane is the low man on the pole.

You can't criticise him for fighting the champion first and winning the lineal title. Just because a contender is considered more dangerous than the champion, doesn't mean there's anything wrong with winning the lineal title before fighting the contender, if you have the chance to. It's crazy to criticise him for winning the lineal title. What you should criticise him for is for failing to defend it against a single top Welterweight, especially as a whole crop of contenders came along who were better than the champion he had beaten.

Shane Mosley is the best Welterweight in the world until Floyd Mayweather proves otherwise. But like he has said, "We're not fighting to prove who the best is."
