I’d also agree with you it doesn’t mean he won’t beat Plant. I actually think he probably will beat Plant.
But the performance against Gavril has to be considered when assessing. Surely?
I agree he has improved since then but it’s still something we need to consider when analysing.

115-112 Gavril for me. Benavidez landed the flashier combinations but Gavril blocked a lot of shots on the gloves and was the more consistent and accurate fighter. Benavidez boxed quite lacklustre aside from the odd flashes until he finally upped the tempo in the 10th round. The fact the judges had it 9-3 Benavidez shows the fix was definitely in. I’d classify this as a robbery based on the cards. Gavril definitely got a raw deal.
I agree with your OP that it’s not relevant now, as Benavidez has improved over the years and he put the controversy to bed by clearly winning the rematch but I do maintain Gavril got jobbed in that first fight.Mammoth likes this.

He improved in his very next fight winning every single round in the rematch IIRC. The 20 year old Benevidez was in rough for the first time in his career and learned from it. Tough fights like that are good for up and comers IMO.

Gavril not only dropped Benividez but arguably beat him.
He wrote the wrong in the rematch and he definitely deserves credit for that because he didn’t have to.
And I agree he has improved since then and that can be chalked down as a learning fight,
But it still is illogical to act like that fight doesn’t exist.
