Benavidez was caught square due to poor footwork, his chin is fine.

Yeah he’s flat footed. Plant’s movement will give him big problems I think.

Is it really reaching though when he arguably lost that fight?

It’s not like he dominated but just got hit with a flash KD.

Yeah he did get a gift that night. That was a disgraceful robbery. I’m sure the judges shamefully scored it like 9-3 to Benavidez as well.

He did put things right in the rematch though. I’ll give Benavidez some credit for that.

I don't think it's the same as Canelo getting rocked by Cotto's older brother but I don't think that specific criticism to Benavidez really does anything for Plant or Canelo.

People pointed to Canelo getting rocked by Cotto as evidence Canelo could be rocked and hurt against other guys like Miguel Cotto, GGG, Jacobs, etc. The problem with this is that Canelo was not only very young but also trying to fight at a lower weightclass than what he could make in a healthy manner. Canelo also dominated most of that fight.

Benavidez got dropped and benefitted from a close decision but he wasn't hurt. He also looked great in the rematch, so I don't really understand the criticism. It can't be about his chin because he wasn't really hurt, and he has obviously improved based on how he handled the rematch and all he has accomplished since.

The fight I would get confidence from if I was Plant or one of his fans is the Dirrel fight. That fight showed good movement has potential to disrupt Benavidez' effectiveness.

He should have also lost that fight but oh well.

Dropped and lost the fight but same as Jose Cotto tho.

Closish fight which I saw for Benavidez but the kid was young and it was his first time past 10 rounds in what was quite a considerable step up. Clear his energy mangement wasn't on point. Look I'm not saying Benavidez doesn't have flaws or that it's entirely irrelevent, it's more a general observation on the tendency on NSB to single out rare weak performances - even from years in the past - to argue that a boxer is weak now. Every fighter turns in poor performances now and then, whether it's just the styles clash, inexperience (as I think in this case), a bad camp or whatever.

I'm looking forward to this fight precisely because it gives us a chance to see whrther a relatively skilled and slick operator like Plant can capitalise of Benavidez' perceived weakness - or conversely how much David has developed and learned in the 6 or so years since the first Gavril fight.

To be honest, that wasn't even a knockdown. It looks more of a slip.
