I don't think it was anything too impressive. apart from his win over Sharkey,I see nothing special on it.

Armstrong had been ko'd in5 by Everett in his previous fight.

Everett had been kod in2 by Van Buskirk in his previous fight.

Jackson was an alcoholic, consumptive ,and had not fought for 5 and half years.

    Goddard was 40 years old.

The draw with Choynski was very creditable but Jeffries had a whopping 52lbs on Choynski.

Ruhlin was, like Jeffries a novice and he'd been stopped by the unheralded Yank Kenny.

Likewise Griffin too was a just an up and comer.

      Agreed on both points.

He faced a lot more adversity than Rocky too as contenders ducked him, being mistreated by the media and fans, his advanced age once he finally was allowed to reach the top, and then Clay and his psychopath goons freaking him out.

Overall though I don't mind Marciano being ranked above him since he was lucky to be born in that timeframe, he had a more shiny career. Luck plays a big factor in how great an ATG can become, many don't realize that. I said this in the other thread, if Liston was placed in the 70s I believe he would be higher regarded because I can see him slaughtering the entire division, defeat George Foreman and then lose to Ali. Imagine his resume. To be fair btw, I think he would have issues with Young and Holmes.

Anyway, Apple boy, you can't be serious about Marciano beating Liston? This is a horrendous styles mismatch. Marciano only fights going forward. Liston is a brick wall, one of the strongest HW grapplers of all time. He pushes Marciano on his back legs which will put him out of balance the entire fight, then he gets hit with uppercuts and short powerful hooks. It will probably look similar to the Patterson KO but Marciano would put up a better fight.
Liston would have racked up a hell of resume in the '70s. Frazier loses to him in the same manner he did Foreman. Norton? Quarry? No chance. I'd have paid cold hard cash to see Liston vs Foreman.

What can I say I disagree with most of the posts here.

These guys Liston beat weren’t that good. Cleveland Williams was never good. He never beat anyone good, he loses to both La Starza and Layne.

Layne beat much better fighters and La Starza had a better record. Charles just straight up wasn’t past it - he still had plenty of fight in him and lost it all the night he got in with Marciano. Charles was the number one contender he was not past it this is a myth he’s 33 not 40.

Williams beat cab drivers and then lost to anyone with a pulse - even really small guys (since size matters so much).

We got Williams - Patterson and Folley as the best guys on Listons resume - and Liston quitting, getting knocked out or losing at all points in his career. There is no way he’s done better work than Marciano sorry. I disagree with all of you

Liston beats those guys I agree. Liston and Foreman prime for prime might be a burner though.

And yes Marciano knocks Liston out. Liston won’t back up and this will be his biggest mistake. Marciano will survive Listons early onslaught and unload something nasty in the middle rounds. Marciano is much stronger than anyone Liston has faced. Just watch Liston go the distance with Machen. Liston is also the strongest guy Rock will have faced - but nobody was ever able to stand on front of Marciano. They all felt his power and went on the backfoot. Even Louis

Marciano will get in so close with Liston, his long arms will be useless. Patterson is nothing like Marciano - he’s built like a middleweight and never had any strength at heavyweight or punch resistance. Just look at the photo of Marciano and Patterson - holding his little hand up like a little apple.
