    Boxing and mental illness

How many fighters have been diagnosed with mental illness and or committed? I started thinking about this after discussing Terry Mcgovern who had spent time in an asylum. Batlling Nelson is another who was committed. Who else can we come up with? There has to be plenty to discuss.

Frank Bruno was sent to a mental health hospital for a while in the early 2000s. And, quite ironically, Oliver McCall - his opponent when Frank became a world champion - spent time in a similar place as well.

I have wondered the same thing about fans of boxing.

Ad Wolgast was found incompetent at just 29 years old and sent to a sanitarium. He escaped and lived in the woods for a while. When found he was declared competent in 1918 to take care of himself. In 1927 he was committed to Stockton state hospital where he lived the rest of his days until dying in 1955.

Bobby Chacon, one of my youth heroes. He ended his life while under hospěce care for dementia, though technically speaking he died at home.

There is a sad testimony of his decline, before the very end, on a YouTube video that - for some reason - I cannot correctly link here. The video name if you want to search for yourselves is End Of The Line featuring Bobby Chacon.

Oliver McCall was the first that came to my mind.

Yes, and he went there first, too.

Such a great fighter, such a sad ending.
