Marciano was a thug in his youth, he found himself taking up boxing as a pro age 24 because he failed at every other job he tried. If you couldn’t keep a steady job at 24 and could only resort to fighting what does that tell you about him? One day he came home and tried to hide the fact that he had seriously hurt someone at the ice rink one day. A large kid much bigger than he and his friends had picked a fight with them and rocky managed to knock the kid unconscious to the point he was twitching. It was then and there Marciano said he knew he had to be careful when hauling off and slugging someone. His entire boxing career sort of devulged into finding ways to get close to you and land that perfect shot. He did this in many ways like baiting - feigning clumsiness - non stop pressure and crouching very low. You couldn’t block punches because he would punch your arms. So many would simply backpedal or run.
the other thing is while he had a record of something like 9 wins and 4 losses - without any skill and training at all he knocked the majority of his opponent’s out cold even while weighing 160 lbs. power was on the menu from a very young age.
in retirement Marciano went a bit crazy since he had dedicated 10+ years of his life to spartan living and sacrifice. What this does to your mind and body we can only speculate - but the legionaires after serving their term were entitled to state run brothels on their return to occupy the veterans and keep them from destroying the entire city, which they did sometimes during tribunes. Marciano basically ate and f.*cked himself to death in retirement - he was noted to have broken a pay phone off the wall with a punch for stealing a quarter off of him. Temperamental and restless - not always the most fun guy to hang out with.
the reason I put Marciano on a pedestal among heavies is because its well documented how dedicated and hard the man trained. There is actually no comparison between he and other heavies. He’s simply in better condition than all of them. He can outlast them and recover instantly from even the hardest blows. He can punch extremely hard both naturally but also from hard work in the gym that developed his power. When someone goes the distance with him or manages to go a few rounds it’s because he is also a very short limbed fighter who has to get very close to you to land. His reach is 68 compared to Tysons 72 yet they are the same height.
however the men who did this were very slick and capable of doing this. There are many heavyweights who are not. I believe Marciano would have hurt or knocked the majority of heavyweights out that would try to **** with him or coast on the ropes.
Marciano could sense fatigue and he would hit the gas the second he noticed a fighter trying to catch his breath. This alone would defeat a lot of fighters. You can see in many bouts that appear competitive and they just take a nose dive for no apparent reason - this is because they are exhausted from trying to avoid being Koed. They feel a shot on the arm and it numbs them and they think damn I better not get caught by this guy and the whole plan turns into survive and avoid.

I don't think Marciano a bad person any more than I do Tyson. We've all made mistakes, sometimes more than once. That doesnt define your whole being.

the type of people Marciano associated with could be murderers. The people who sat at the table with him.
you can’t kill someone with your barehands and not have it effect you in your personal life. Marciano was an ax murderer in the ring. All these guys have “issuesby general standards. Its not normal to workout 9 hours a day for 10 yearsLast edited by them_apples; 12-10-2024, 11:26 AM.
