Why is it that complicated?
because 19 is a red herring. X (includes the 19) so you dont add it on the other side of equation so X = 63 - 17 X= 46

-19 + 17 = -2 (the net amount of people who got off)
This left 63 ppl on the train, so you add the 2 who got off to see how many were originally there.
It's easy to get confused if you're the type of person who over-thinks these things though. Pretty hard for a second grade question.
