Snitching is about breaking a code within criminals. If we're both slanging and you get popped, and sing about me, that's snitching.

One man's ********* is another mans patriot.

That aside, snitching is ratting on someone for something instead of letting things play out against them naturally or letting them be disciplined in whatever manner by whoever's job it is to punish or hold accountable.

We can stretch it in dimensions to make some repercussions of the act seem more extreme than others, and we can stretch it in ways that make it seem noble (as in the ends justifying the means) but snitching is snitching any way you slice it.

If I was one of the people doing the crime, then absolutely not. Just ****ty to throw the people I did something with under the bus and in exchange get less time than them.

If someone committed a crime that I was not involved in, especially if negatively affects myself, family or friends, or something very serious like **** or murder, then I will totally snitch.

Then you need to define what 'here' is.

Agreed with this post. I think snitching should only refer to **** you were involved in, but in practice most people use the term to refer to talking to the police at all.

"Here" is this thread. There are no gray areas here. Snitching is snitching, whether it's tattling on your sibling for taking an extra cookie out of the cookie jar, or whistleblowing.

Snitching isn't limited to the police.

The police isn't the only "authority" or even an "authority" at all in many situations. You can snitch to parents, friends, random people, store owners, higher ranking people in the military, just about anyone who has the power to punish an individual, or who had something happen unbeknownst to them that would otherwise pass unknown for the immediate future.

Well then it's a no, not sure what you're fishing for.

So is gossiping considered "snitching" too?

"Aye Tom! Did you hear Becky went over to Jamal's house for that BBC even though she has a boyfriend? And I heard she was kissing him on the lips after taking Jamal's load, gross!"

In this case, did the unidentified male "snitch" on Becky about her addiction to BBC to Tom? Because now Tom knows something about Becky that she doesn't want to get out, he knows her secret. But at the same time Tom is no authority figure. And he didn't actually tell Becky's boyfriend either. So was Becky snitched upon?

He isn't an authority figure in that there is some major punishement to issue but does it affect him? If it's his girl, or his daughter, etc, then yes. If he is just some random who is hearing some gossip but it has no bearing on him, then no.

It's snitching on Becky if the person told has some emotional, financial, personal investment in the matter.

Not fishing for anything really, just want people to take a firm stand with a yes or no, and not hang on a neutral answer like "it depends".

Of course in life context matters and there are exceptions to every rule. But here, I want people to sack up and make a bold stance one way or the other, and then get into heated arguments over it for my amusement.
