The only race bit he ever did that I found had any depth to it at all was the now-infamous "black people vs *****s" bit from "Bring the Pain."

He also had some memorable pieces on fame, love, and family, but overall I find him tiresome and feel as if he panders to an audience which is on a much lower intellectual level than he is.

Are you serious about Chris Rock though? Granted he had some funny bits, but I'm quite familiar with his career and most of it has been "black people do this" and "white people do this" bits.

I prefer a bit more social commentary and depth to my comedy. Carlin and Hicks being key examples of that preference.
Oh, I was talking CURRENT stand ups. I can't think of many Fat Yank stand ups that make me laugh today (though granted, I don't watch a lot of stand up).

Having said this, I've only seen, ISTR, two stand ups live. One was Stewart Lee, the other was a guy called Lee Evans. I went because four friends were going, and one of them got ill on the day. They pissed themselves, I was stoney faced.

As for Gary Wilmot (you've never "heard much"? You've heard some then?) I just named him to be silly.... he's a 1970s MOR, family-friendly comedian. Can't think of a way to liken him to a US equivalent, so I was going to post a YT vid. Except he's so great, they're aren't any. And Youtube has some OBSCURE comedians on it.

If you genuinely appreciate the art of stand-up comedy, which I know you do, you should give Bill Burr and Louis C.K a listen.

Lewis Black as well, but only if you're familiar with Fat Yank politics, as a great deal of his material is political in nature.

Yeah, I've heard a few bits from Wilmot. Not sure when or where it was that I'd originally seen 'em, but I saw some obscure documentary on British comedians on youtube and he was one of the ones featured. It mostly showed punchlines and I left unimpressed.

        @ the bolded.

Just as an example, there was this comedian who was on about a handful of MOR variety shows back in the early 80s called Roy Jay.

It didn't even occur to me at the time that he speaks with a Fat Yank accent, I dunno whether he was or not.

Anyway, I LOVED him at the time (I was about 8!!) and, while I can't find any stand up vid of his, his commercial is on there:

Now, go down the street in Green Teefland and say to people above thirty:
"Do you remember Gary Wilmot?" and the chances are at least 40% of them will go "Oh yeah... he was that guy who was a complete ****ing ****, wasn't he?"

Go to the same people "remember Roy Jay? The guy in the prisoner outfit who used to say stuff like 'spook!' and 'you'll all be doing it tomorrow'?" and they'll go "who the ****'s that?"

Right. He should have been. I forgot. I forgot Dave Allen and Kenny Everett as well.

I should have made this in TC. The thread has taken a turn where it wasn't supposed to. I don't give a **** about stand-uppers.

In all genuine seriousness, the answer should clearly, IMO, be "Charlie Chaplin".

That option was only made so ****s could play knowitalls and raise themselves over paysants.
