so jarlaxe you dont expect the 500 version of the ps3 to sell? i think itll sell quite well if anybody actually reads it cause i think a ton of people dont care about using their console for more than a gaming machine and movie machine
ill probably get myself the 600 ps3 just cause it may one day have something i wanna hook up to it but i would be probably just as happy with the 500 version myself
im not at all caring about a wireless controller cause you gotta charge those things and keep batteries in them
im very content and actually prefer the wired controller and thats for any console
im bad enough to lose the tv remote or cable remote so last thing i need is to have someone take the playstation remote off to another room and lose it
wireless is cool if you sit far away from your tv and you got a big enough tv to do it but otherwise sorta pointless imo

With the HDMI slot Sony is giving the average consumer no choice but to use the console for something other then a gaming machine. This isn’t 2000 we have had 5 years of Bush barrel politics. People aren’t going to spend 200 more for a console unless they know what they are getting and that means they will know they are buying a Blue-ray player and many will know that the 600 dollar version insures that the Blue-ray player will work if HDMI cables are ever a necessity.

Whats really sad is sony is reportedly selling these bastards at a loss. I guess it cost close to 1000 to build them. I guess they dont want to lose anymore ground to xbox.

Also do you really need a link to see that the US is a larger market. Just look at NPD numbers in the US and Japan. The only thing thats really close to being even is handhelds. The US sells 3 times the hardware and software and thats without PC gamers. They also produce more. This was not true 15 years ago but today the US produces more and buys more and Europe is not far off.
I don’t think that FF is influential anymore. It used to be but now its seems like the FF series is doing more borrowing then pace setting. I rarely bash RPGs for being linear if they have a nice combat system like Icewind Dale they can still be fun. Even then I don’t see a linear game as an RPG when comparing it to a game with actual roleplaying. FF doesn’t even give you roleplaying mechanics. Even linear RPGs let you create a character or don whatever armor or weapons you would like. FF was more of an actionless adventure game until this last one that is obviously more open-ended. All RPGs are linear in the sense that they have an beginning and an end. Its whats in-between that matters and like I said if JRPGs are the only RPGs you play you will have no concept of roleplaying. Its like playing a sports game where all the players do is sit on then bench and chew tobbachy.
My character in Oblivion that I created is a woman so I don’t have a problem with non-masculine characters. My problem is that its totally market driven by pop culture even when it obviously infringes on artistic creativity. When you are forced to create a character that despite wielding a 50 pound weapon and being faced with saving the world has to look like a ***** because people like bitches something is wrong.
Also with the backstory it’s the same forced contradictions that we see in poor western writing thats another reason I dislike most RPG stories.
Roleplaying by its self is different then roleplaying in a game. Roleplaying by itself is just pretending to be something. Kids playing Cops and Robbers is an example of roleplaying. Now when you add “game” to it the definition changes now you have a game that’s core concept is based on roleplaying. Now that kid is given a world where he can be a cop or a robber that’s where roleplaying changes from just pretending because now you have that character. So now its about being that character controlling that character and doing what you want the character to do.
Freedom is always going to be either illusionary or limited in any video game RPG. You can never do exactly what you wanted and even in a very open RPG the story is still at the very least pulling major puppet strings behind the scene. In Oblivion if you get bit by a Vampire and you don’t drink a cure disease potion you will become a Vampire. At one point in the game the devs pull those strings and just give characters the disease. So bam you are a vampire but after that you have choices. Do you
A. seek a cure immediately
B. weigh the pros and cons and decide you rather be a Vampire
C. Decide you want to be a vampire long enough to face other Vampires without worrying about catching a disease that you already have.
Each choice will have its own effects. If you stay a Vampire you will be forced to feed on people or you will never be able to go out in the day. At the same time you will become more and more powerful, while the NPCs around you react differently as you lose personality points and are forced to bite more people.
If you cure yourself you will be given an extra cure that you can give away completing a separate mission.
That’s roleplaying in a game. That’s where FF has been a joke. Its called an RPG but there is no more cause and effects to your actions then a typical movie.. its all scripted.
Until it was announced that the PS 3 would be 600 bucks I fully expected Sony to continue with a greater share of the market. Now I don’t, and that with full understanding that MS would be lucky to grab 10% of Japan.
thanks for your definition of role playing. fact of the matter is that i mainly play fighting games just because i don't have that much time to dedicate to other games. that and i like the competition. but to each their own, and in the same way you don't like FF, i doubt i could get involved in something like Oblivion. while it looks to be a great game, there are too many different elements (i doubt i could deal with FPS aspect of it) and the dedication to play it isn't for me. as far as your other problems with the games, the market will always dictate what sells due to popularity. whether you like it or not is all on you, but the business is doing what they need to make money, and in the end, that's what matters most to the people signing the checks. everyone is entitled to their opinion. and if they like the middle of FF better than a more open ended RPG, that's on them. what's better is up for debate and will always be up for debate.
Sony will have it's market share. Japan is iffy at the moment, as a poll done by Yahoo! Japan shows that there aren't a lot of people dedicated to buying the system when it drops. and it's split pretty evenly among those who are waiting for a price drop, who may buy when it comes out and those who don't want to. the US may be the difference as we're a totally consumer driven country, Ebay is going to be lit up during November. if blu-ray becomes the industry standard, then Sony will jump in market share, as it becomes the cheapest blu-ray player out there. but all these variables are speculation. i don't think that Sony will lose out on a huge percent of the market, but the competition will be good for everyone hopefully as it may affect a faster price drop. it'll be an interesting christmas season.

Originally posted by unit021i asked for numbers for one major reason, it gives legitimacy and proof to your claim. this market and industry is worldwide, so i believe that publishers and developers are concerned with certain regions, but that the market share will be based on worldwide sales. in that sense i would think that Japan would sell more based on certain economic and social factors, things such as economic disparity, popularity of games beyond the 18-25 year old demographic, access to newer technology, etc. but then again, all of the numbers could point to the US, because we are the world's most consumer driven market (well until China has a better distribution of wealth and curtails economic disparity). either or, i just wanted proof.

If you dont think sony is going to lose a huge percent of the market you are either insane or you dont know how great a share of the market they had. Sony was not the neck to neck leaders Sony had a huuuuge lead. They cant help but to lose a large share of the market even if the PS 3 does well.

i never said that Sony wouldn't lose a piece of its market, but i think that in the total world market share, Sony will still be in the lead. i understand how dominating Sony is in terms of its market share at the moment, but Nintendo will definitely take some of its market share with the Wii (consumers like new things, and the Wii is new and is very likeable due to its innovation and franchises that can appeal to an older crowd via nostalgia and to the younger crowd for its "cute" factor). i dunno about how well the 360 is doing on the world stage, but from what i've seen, the only place the 360 has really thrived is north America. MS needs to fix that if they want to continue competition. they can't survive just based on the North American consumers.

Originally posted by unit021Nope. i wanted retail sales numbers. production and shipped numbers don't mean anything if the units aren't moving and there's no profit being made. i haven't looked at an issue of EGM in a loooooooooong time. my preferred magazine was Gamefan, but they lost out a while ago. Play seems to be the new generation of Gamefan, but i stopped buying gaming magazines once i got a better internet connection.
