Look, Hagler is my favorite fighter, and I give all possible credit to Leonard for making the plan, sticking to it, and, most of all making hagler fight his fight. Nonetheless I think that more than leonard winning it is a fight that hagler lost at the table (given how close the fight was 15 rounds OR a smaller ring would have been enough to get a W, since Leonard was exhausted at the end) and in the ring (what were hagler and his corner thinking in the early rounds? moving around in an orthodox stance)
As far as Duran goes I think the 1st fight was a fluke because, as great as Duran is, Leonard lost the fight by fighting the wrong fight. I think he would have won the rematch, short notice or not, but not that spectacularly.
Leonard is an all time great, but he proved many time to be a ***** outside the ring, and I am not talkin about ducking fighters: I am talking about abusing your "popular icon/money draw" status to make the fight easier for you. Oscar De La Hoya, while a lesser boxer, might have pulled the same **** Leonard did out of the ring. He chose not to: he gets more respect from me as a man.
The point I was trying to make in the first post is that in the future when all is said and doneand we compare pbf and srl (p4p because I am sure leonard size would make sure pbfcomes out the loser in a fantasy matchup), pbf won't have pulled that ****, and that is going to matter.
Yea, i agree.
Maybe i just havent read all the stuff about Leonards 'tactics' before his big fights.
Or maybe im not interested in them, as i see them as whinging gossip.
Yet, in the ring, Leonard tried and failed to outfight Duran, TKO'd Hearns wen he had no other choice, and came out of retirement to beat Hagler.
For me, wen all is said and done, in the ring he showed real heart and incredible determination.
I never liked him until i watched the first Hearns fight last year. He won my respect.
To answer the original thread question. Is Floyd as talented as Leonard.
If Floyd ever finds himself needing a knockout to win, and pulls it off. Or tries to out fight a guy like Hatton (the way Leonard did against Duran), we will never know if he can do all the things Leonard did.
When I first got into boxing, it was during the rise of Leonard, and I did not like him.
I never bought his nice guy persona- never. Why? Well, because when he behaved like an egotistical ass it seemed far more genuine. I think his "I'm such a good guy" personality had a lot to do with his controversial wins.
No doubt he was a great boxer, I'd never dispute that. But he always struck me as disingenuous, still does, so I never had much fun watching his fights.

Yes the Hearns fight is amazing, that is fighting heart at its best! Leonard was in with a bigger, powerful guy who was outboxing him and did the only thing he could do... survive and KO him!

then we will never know because Floyd should have met his duran and hearns at 130.
If he tries to outfight Hatton, Margarito, Castillo or Cotto at 140-147 (which is like 160-168 for Leonard) I will scream "idiot" to the TV... although if he manages to beat one of them by outmanning him I will scream "MIRACLE" and consider him on the same level with robinson, gans, armstrong... remember 140-147 weight class number 3-4 for floyd... if he stood and trade he would be a fool. If he did it and succeeded... chapeau. respect. rispetto. hat trick. grand slam. I mean what more could you ask? Nothing, in fact he will not do it.
