This whole situation is bull****. The drug he was taking is about as big of a performance booster as coffee. I understand why the Wilder team pulled out of the fight, Povetkin was taking a CURRENTLY illegal drug.
Still though, everything we know about the drug makes it seem less and less like PED. I think some of you guys really need to read about this. Additionally this move could have been political: soviet medicine developed differently from Western medicine. There are drugs that ex-soviet athletes take that Americans would never come in contact with. Given the current political climate the banning of this drug world wide could be western retaliation and a political move. It could be akin to the Russians choosing to ban a painkiller that all western athletes are on and calling all those athletes cheats.
From the wikipedia"Forbes reported that anesthesiology professor Michael Joyner, at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, who studies how humans respond to physical and mental stress during exercise and other activities, told them that "Evidence is lacking for many compounds believed to enhance athletic performance. Its use has a sort of urban legend element and there is not much out there that is clearly that effective. I would be shocked if this stuff [meldonium] had an effect greater than caffeine or creatine (a natural substance that, when taken as a supplement, is thought to enhance muscle mass).”[68] Ford Vox, a U.S.-based physician specializing in rehabilitation medicine and a journalist reported "there's not much scientific support for its use as an athletic enhancer"" - read the sources.

And think about the Meldonium situation. His camp probably was delaying the fight because they knew he would test positive for Meldonium since he definitely took in 2015. It wasn't even a question. They thought it would be out of the system by May thus tried to push the fight off.
As for 'trying to cheat', that's heavily arguable. None of us on these boards know what actually happened. Here's what we know:
-Povetkin tested for Meldonium.
-WBC postponed the fight.
-VADA has stated that concentration of less than 1000 nanogram in any test taken BEFORE March 1st is due to intake in 2015 and thus is not considered cheating.
Here's what we are told (this info could be false):
-Meldonium concentration was 70 nanograms.
-Povetkin tested clean 3 times before in early April
Assuming all the info above is actually true, that means he somehow tested dirty for very small amounts after testing clean. I'm gonna borrow next part from another thread:
And if you think I'm some Povetkin excuser like the /// dude.. I'm not. I don't like neither Wilder nor Povetkin. But I was really looking forward to their fight.
Why wouldnt Wilder want to fight Povetkin? Hes 36 and his team are the ones that have been pushing it back for months.
Maybe pushing back the fight cause of the "Meld"? Why? They pushed back when it was legal so why push back to a time when it isnt? Makes no sense at all! Unless the rampart reports out of Russia are true and he was trying to get other things out of his system.
And who pushed fight back again and again is well documented so its not just me making this up in my head.
Just like many i wanted the fight so badly to see if Wilder is real cause Povetkin would have been his biggeset test and i think Wilder would have KO'd him but we wont know that cause Povetkin got popped. Shame but oh well.

Wilder was set to make 4.6 million. Why wouldn't he want to fight? Win or lose he wins the lottery & that would help give him & his daughter a better life. Povetkin screwed up. He already has millions stockpiled. Wilder doesn't...

Legal or otherwise, Povetkin had no business being on a drug to treat a heart condition. Neither did Sharapova or any of the other Russians who were on it.
Would Wilder have fought him last year? He'd probably have fought him this year if he was advised to by his managers and advisors.
