Comments Thread For: "Fighting Words" - Golovkin, Canelo and Positions of Power

by David P. Greisman - The powers-that-be in boxing don't make their decisions with consistency in mind. Their choices are a matter of convenience. There's a turn of phrase that is cutesy, clich and still too true: If it makes dollars, it makes sense. That's why HBO's broadcast of Gennady Golovkin's latest win came to a close the way it did.

The reason they won't pay for Ward to fight lesser opponents is because he's boring. All his fights go to decision. Ggg fights all end in knockouts, that's why they pay for his. Real fans want to see knockouts not decisions.

And so while there was pressure over the past couple years for Andre Ward to move up from super middleweight to face light heavyweight titleholder Sergey Kovalev — a fight that is likely to happen later this year —Golovkin hasn’t yet been forced to make the move from 160 to 168.
        For many good reasons

        1. Ward struggles to make 168, Ggg makes 160 with ease. Many posters (mostly bad ones, granted) expect him to go down to 155 for a unification
        2. Ggg much better **** for their buck.
        3. Ggg never cleaned out his division. Ward did long ago, kinda. Ggg has never even been #1 in major rankings.
        4. Ggg is mando for the biggest fight in boxing. Ward and Kovalev got **** for prospects

Re 3, what's this sites position, if Canelo gets stripped for ducking the mando? Is he still #1 at MW?

He fights better guys , Ward would knock out Wades every day of the week .

Wards best opponents puts GGGs to shame Ward has real fast track elite guys on his resume GGG has nobodys , its relative , and on top of that if GGG would get in the ring with Ward you would see what boring does to your exciting .

Youre a little warped in your idea of real fans , real fans want to see real competition between top fighters not slaughter of bums , by your own reasoning Butterbean with 58 kos in 78 wins inside 4 rounds is better than GGG .

Wards best opponent is a cherry pick for Ggg per you guys, even with the weight and home turf advantage. I disagree but Froch was leaning your way: "we'll swerve him if we can, punches like a mule, dangerous fight"

Drop the belt because that's all the G monster wants.

Ward has a better resume, sure, because he was in the Super 6.

Take off Froch & Dawson though and Ward's resume has nothing on GGG's. That's only two guys, so where are all the KOs?

But dont take off nothing , why do you need to add or subtract anything to try and equalize them , it is what it is , GGG has beat nobody while Ward has beat elite fighters thats a fact and its my only complaint with Gennady he doesnt fight good elite guys and talks BS to avoid fighters better than he has ever fought .

It could easy be settled , put them in the ring with out this ducking BS CW and see what happens , Im very confident Ward will school him he has so much more skill as a fighter , we seen years of Floyd nullifying big punchers and Ward will do the same to GGG , Gennady has the power but lets see what happens when its against an elite opponent that can really fight that has a little size on him .
