I was sad to see him retire but thought his retirement would have a positive affect on NSB because the discussion topics would no longer be about him. Unfortunately, all his retirement has done is made posters discuss him more than ever.
he moved up to junior middleweight to beat oscar de la hoya, miguel cotto and canelo alvarez.
even though he was a small welterweight that could have cut to 140.
this narrative that he never took risks is completely untrue. he took calculated risks that paid off and because people don't like him, he'll never get the credit he deserves.
NOBODY went undefeated through a more impressive resume of fighters over the last ten years.
not so sure about that to be honest, as he couldn't make the 144 he agreed when he fought the Mexican legend juan manuel marquez.
obviously has a top notch resume, but you can still pick holes in it. for example, may vs cotto was clamoured for in 2008 before tony chinned him. im not putting the blame solely on Floyd for it not happening but either way it didn't happen and that's the bottom line.
you've also got margarito, also a fight a lot of fans wanted to see back in the day, and im sure there are more.
as for risks, it was highly disappointing that may and pac never squared off in 2010. ill just leave that subject at that. but what really takes the piss is floyds last "fight" BERTO!!! what an absolute farce. it was his last fight, had no real options in his division, so a true champion would have found bigger trees to chop and took on one of the middleweight champs at least.
Hello, friends. Just curious to know whether most of you were relieved or sad when Mayweather retired? I sort of miss seeing him in the ring tearing it up.
Both; sad that he was calling it a career, but relieved that he walked when he did (as it was becoming clear that the slippage in pure ability was setting in).
The moment I saw Floyd stall Andre Berto with shenanigans, all in the name of catching 2-3 quick breaths, let me know that the time was about up for him as a "world's beyond anyone' type fighter. He's still good enough to topple 97% of the fighters anywhere near his weight (140-160), but I wouldn't have put the Floyd that fought Andre Berto in with a guy like Kell Brook at this point.
The poll is crazy, but my answer is no, I thought nothing of it. He's at the end of the line, I have seen enough of him already in his prime, and I saw enough to show me that he is done at the top level. If his heart is not in it anymore, then I don't care to see him fight because he will just end up taking unnecessary punishment and losses like Roy Jones Jr.
relieved, as good as he was he didn't give us a lot of entertainment towards the tail end of his career (inside the ring) and frankly it was time to go.
