Ali beat bigger men, so have many great fighters that fought under the old divisional system.
So what ?
Because there are NOW 17 divisions in which to compete, of course the numbers will rise..... and btw, somebody was always going to tip-toe through the tulips to get xx divisional titles.
Now, do mean bigger men, like Margarito? Then no, of course not, we would have to be talking about divisional supremacy, so no..... beating that slow unskilled unranked plodder does not achieve anything when referencing greatness. Had Pac gone up and beaten the top JMW, then yes, of course it would count.
IF you can beat bigger men, then you will likely achieve divisional supremacy, and you will be judged on that.
You have to compare apples with apples man.

not sure how people are counting victoriers over hatton and barrera both non sanctioned titles fights as being part odf eight divisions.
he never defended titles at 135, 112, or 130 has only 3 titles defenses at 147 just pure media hype the roberto duran of my generation.

Pac was actually the underdog in the 2nd fight against Morales... All these excuses about Raheem only coming out now because nobody expected he is going to kick the **** out of Morales after what happened in the first fight.. So yeah.. try harder..

A better explanation......

I agree with your statement above.
I am suggesting the ability to beat bigger men in no way plays a part in a fighters greatness.
What I am suggesting is that you do not get credit for having "the ability" to beat bigger men..... you would actually have to beat them in the ring, for that to be regarded as a meaningful achievement.
Once you have done that successfully, you will have achieved divisional supremacy...... and you will be judged on that, which is enough.
Mystic, magical, points being awarded for "my little guy" does not count..... because you are attempting to reference greatness, and there are many great fighters in the past that you do not know.
Armstrong is not credited with anything except WINNING the fights that counted. His achievements relate to divisional supremacy only. He did not get awarded any fantasy points for being the little guy.
Plenty of guys tried and failed against larger opponents, so what.

As for his run at jr featherweight. I think I made it clear I gad no issues with him moving up to fight Barrera. I just pointed out that he didn't hold the lineal title in that division. And never fought anything close to the best in that loaded division.
As for the lineage of Floyd's welterweight title. He beat Baldomir, who beat Judah, who beat Spinks, who beat Mayorga, who beat Forrest, who beat Mosley, who beat DLH. That pretty much reflects what was seen as the class of the division during that respective time period. But of course, its Floyd's fault an underdog champion was holding what had been recognized as THEE welterweight title when he his the division.Last edited by mikemurni; 03-22-2015, 09:54 PM.

Just FYI, it was that win against Margarito that gave Cotto the leverage to fight Floyd at 154.. The same Margarito that you are downplaying on Pac's resume..Last edited by mikemurni; 03-22-2015, 11:01 PM.
