If you do a background check on my circa 2007-2008 posting days, you will notice me to be a Floyd fan. A nuthugger if you will. I was in my early 20's, heck I even listened to Hardcore Rap. My grammar also wasn't up to snuff. But things have changed. You know - as you get older you get wiser, get a better job, your politics change slightly as well. And so on and so forth.

But what about the new generation of Floyd fans? Are they just a bunch of degenerates stuck on being permanently ****** or what? A bunch of E-criminals and E-thugs with a slight touch of Afrocentrism. Do we blame the rise of Social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram as well as smarthphones) for this dumbification? We probably have 40 year old Floyd fans on here who cannot be distinguished from the 20 year old ones.

What sociopolitical factors are there to consider?

    Discuss.
They're all ****s. Not sure about you, havent seen the trademark racism/idiocy that permeates floyd entire fanbase.

Great post. This ******ness, people judging others (not only boxers but others online they know nothing about) over a fight that never happened and boxers that don't know them and don't care about them, is just ridiculous. Trying to categorise vast sums of people by one boxer or another is one step away from the craziness we see in this world. The sport that we all profess to love has been lost in all this (well on this site for sure). My observation is that people like the OP, that seem to want to castigate people because of a boxer they may follow/be a fan of, are the same type that use a boxer to validate themselves in some weird sort of way. That is not maturity to me. Maturity is being able to respect what a protagonist in a sport you claim to love, is capable of. Whether you like them or not. The greatest in boxing have done deplorable things in their lives, but it's what they gave the sport that matters , or should to those that claim to love it.

        I'm anti fanboy of anybody.

All I ask of a fan is that they are fair and unbiased (kinda hard to be if you are a fan)

For example, I've seen people bash Floyd for beating his gf. But in the same paragraph praise fighters like Tyson...

Tyson was not only found guilty of **** but he beat the heck out of Robin Givens, I mean, she looked like what Christie Mack did after War Machine.

Now a true unbiased fan would not make these mistakes.

So in the end, being a fan in general of someone is the issue, hater or whatever you wanna call it.

It's so true. I'll admit I like hopkins and favour him to win but right now you get hopkins fans saying it's an easy night and kovalev has no chance. I'm a fight fan full stop. Imo true unbiased fans enjoy boxing more because when they see a fight between two great fighters they don't immediately say x is gojng to win and flame those who say differently . They say "I can't wait for this fight. It's gonna be good!"

Maybe yes. I think jumping on the TMT bandwagon, calling Floyd TBE/greatest & defending his every move is the male equivalent of teenage girls going full ****** over Justin Beiber.

Hopkins is a great fighter. Kovalev is not, but he is a good fighter. An honest opinion about a fight doesn't make you a fake fan. I can't say Hopkins vs Kovalev is a fight between two great fighters when only one actually has great accomplishments, and great resume. Kovalev is on the road to having a good resume but hasn't accomplished much of anything aside from winning one title like 4 fights ago.

How about we stop dumbing down what is great and accurately label what is good or untested? Kovalev is good, let's not exaggerate and call him great. Th dumbing down of what greatness is, is the same reason why the IBHOF is the biggest joke of all Hall of Fame's of any major sport in the United States and Internationally. It's a fight between a great fighter and a good fighter, and i'm not calling it anything else.

That's just your personal case and perspective. I am, and have been a Floyd fan, regardless of career/education/background/lifestyle. I am a fan because he is a great boxer, and is dedicated to the sport and there is much to learn from a fighter like him when I am also an amateur fighter and passionate about the same sport. A sign of maturity is being able to separate the athlete from the person away from the sport, and not let your biased opinions about someones personal life cloud your assessment of them as an athlete fighter.

Nobody assessment of his skill is being clouded. We are purely talking about being a fan. A la rooting for him over opponent X, Y and Z.

Now, I've got a lot of catching up to do on this thread as many posts have been submitted.

We are focusing on what they're doing in the ring. But you can't overlook the very important aspect of fans being fans of particular fighters and rooting for them to win.

Unless you're suggesting that being a Boxing Fan = being neutral at all times and admiring/appreciating/acknowledging every Boxers skills equally, and just enjoying the fights without picking a favorite.

NO. Floyd had it's use. I rooted for him against Delahoya & Ricky Hatton and debated detractors about it. Fun times on NSB. But eventually you get bored and want something new, which is seeing him lose. It's all about my own personal amusement.

Kind of like with Hopkins. I like the guy (the way he speaks and carries himself), his discipline, his skills etc,. and have been a fan for a long time. But I have no over-the-top loyalty to him like the one poster from Philly (which his equivalent to a Mexican fan rooting for Mexican fighter I guess).

Kovalev is starting to grow on me, and thoughts about the What IF (Hopkins got knocked out and wouldn't it be nice to see that) are floating in my head. Again, just for my own personal amusement.

With that said, I'll still be rooting for B-Hop.
