Most people base pound for pound on overall resume and "what have you done for me lately"...but often times disregard when fighters defeated their opponent which does affect how much credit you should recieve, a fighters psyche after loses affect the way they will perform and alot of boxing is mental, here is a small comparison in their last 5 fights

    Mayweathers Competition:
Cotto(3 fight win streak, revenge against Margarito best at 154),

Ortiz(prime fighter just won biggest fight of his career and a FOTY),

Mosley(past prime but just had one of the biggest wins of his career and rejuvenated his career for sure)

Marquez( won the lineal lightweight title and won the FOTY, was smaller but people forget both started at 126, and 130 respectively Floyd was always a little bigger but outboxed him and didnt impose his size so IMO regardless of weight class wouldve been the same scenario)

Hatton (undefeated also a former titlist at 147 people forget coming off a win of Castillo and Urango, Floyd started at 130 people forget, Hatton has always been at 140 or higher)

    Pacquaio

Marquez(great fighter fight could have went either way kinda controversial to some)

Mosley(older hadnt won a fight in 2 years. thoroughly dominated by Mayweather couldve lost to Mora)

Margarito(coming off a kayo loss to Mosley and a tune up with a no name, fighting for a belt where neither were ranked at a catchweight)

Joshua Clottey(lost every big fight in his career Manny dominated)

Miguel Cotto(coming off a huge beating at the hands of Margarito very vclose fight with Clottey, no real trainer he is comfy with, psych a bit ****ed at a catchweight

So, in my opinion based off their last fights, their skills, when they defeated their opponents, I'd say Mayweather he has the longevity as a p4p guy and has beaten more champions in less fights

but IMO it is fair since they fight around the same weight class now to keep it vacant in publications

Floyd fought better versions of Hatton and Oscar.

They fought the same versions of Cotto and Mosley.

Hatton, Oscar, and Mosley were far better fights when Floyd fought them though. Hatton was still a good fight for Pac though no doubt.

Cotto was a good fight for both, but Pac gets more credit because he did it first.

And the fact that JMM arguably just beat Manny at the same weight where Floyd whupped him, that has to be taken into account.
      kinda what I was thinking

i posted about this in a earlier thread:

they should wait until the pac bradley fight. if pacqiao loses or struggles more than floyd did with cotto then floyd should rightfully be 1#. the 2 have scheduled fights are too close to each other to make a decision now for the sake of making a change. As of now i would keep it as is pac 1 floyd two. You really cant bump manny off since he hasnt had a chance to defend his spot with bradley. Floyd already made his move and it was a good one. Any slip up by pac floyd's performance will automatically supplant him as king again. that's my take on it.

Again, you cant bump pac off when he hasnt had a chance to make his case after floyd made his especially less than a month when pac is scheduled to make a fight. This maneuver seems odd. Just wait one more month to make a final decision.

Also "pound for pound" is a term that was originally coined for who was the best fighter regardless of weight class but who would beat anyone or the most if they were the same size

Mayweather is best tactician in the sport and more adaptable than anyother fighter fighting today, combined with being physically gifted...Manny only knows how to fight one way, when that doesnt work he looks confused and bewildered

IMO Mayweather beats more great fighters H2H

He is my number one pick he never lost in the ring to lose the distinction

It just shows floyd is still living of that performance and it is only one performance against a bloated fighter who didnt know how to step up weight properly.

Make Pac no1 as i kind of feel him being no1 wont be a barrier for him to fight Floyd. If you give Floyd on the other hand no1, he might feel he dont have to fight Pac. Make Floyd work harder for no1.

If Pacquiao wins (even by robbery) they will put him back @ #1. They ride him so hard but it comes with the territory. You have to remember, this is the same website that voted Pacquiao-Marquez robbery of the year for 2011. The majority of these silly p4p lists have Mayweather on top regardless.

We should be able to check this theory on Pacquiao's next fight, since people are saying he didn't perform well in his last fight.
That's nonsense. Cotto himself said he lost a lot of confidence after losing to Margarito the first time and team Pacquiao knew this. Before fighting Floyd Cotto said he felt more confident and he obviously had a better trainer. Fighters are less confident after losses period. Without confidence you are going to breakdown mentally when the going gets tough in he ring.

Everybody knows Pacquiao fought the worse versions of those fighters but the Pacfanss. They tried that same bull**** last November with the Marquez fight and it backfired immensely.

I love the statement the Ring is making. They need to get it on point blank.

P4p means all things being equal who wins. If Pac was naturally a bit bigger he would pulverise Floyd. Being smaller than Floyd he will beat him probably as well. Plus he has beat common opponents better than Floyd that is the only fair way to view it, otherwise you are picking and looking to hard on pac and missing everything else.
Ignoring that SSM has 5 losses, as long as Floyd beat him when SSM came off a win over margarito it is better than Pacs win over SSM, even though Pac didnt nearly knocked out by SSM?. Saying Floyd beat DLH who was better than when Pac fought him, but ignoring DLH came off of a loss to BH. So does that make Floyd inferior to everyone who beat SSM and DLH before him. Its one rule for FLoyd and another for Pac.
Is it too much to admit Floyd is no2 and if he beats Pac there would be fewer arguments that Pac is no1, even though some will still view him as no1. All you floyd fanatics think Floyd will beat Pac. So why cant you give some encouragement for FLoyd to do what hes got to do? Do you want floyd to keep his unbeaten record as much as FLoyd wants it?

Cotto was confident. He had a new trainer and a new weight where he was happy. That is all well and good. But his performances against who he performed against at 154 were no good yardsticks to him being better and is not proof. Cotto would beat any 147 just about, unless their name is Pac or Margarito with plaster.

                      .
