Watched that fight again other day and he fought really well, was a very competitive fight and tbh, no one has come close since that fight to Floyd.

How far past it was he? To put into perspective, he was recently retired following a KO loss to Hopkins and the Mayweather fight was his 2nd in 3 years. 1 year later he was retired in humiliating fashion by Pacquiao.

So should that lead us to believe a prime De La Hoya takes Mayweather?

I would say he was a year past

Oscar was done as a top level fighter, when Floyd fought him. Done. He was a full time "promoter", part time fighter and an inactive fighter at that.

And it was only a "competitive" fight. Because, Floyd allowed it to be. Floyd was too defensive and had(still has) such a safety first mindset. If Floyd would have taken it to another gear he would have punished that version of Oscar.

And, really Oscar only won 3 rounds. 4 rounds if you're generous and gave him the benefit of every doubt.

But, prime for prime. Floyd beats Oscar every time...Every time. Floyd is/was just on another level than Oscar. And, stylistically Oscar wouldn't favor well with a guy like Floyd.

I've always thought you needed a good crisp jab to beat Mayweather and Oscar had it. BUT he had a significant weight advantage given that Mayweather isn't even a big WW let a lone JMW so its a given that he would bully Mayweather around. Oscar also had a good track record against trash talkers.

I think the dynamic of the fight would've been very different had it been prime oscar(147) vs Mayweather -with Mayweather winning MORE decisively than their meeting at 154. .

Really, how many rounds did you give him? iirc it was a wide UD in favour of Mayweather in the view of most.

I don't think DlH ever beats Floyd. Didn't think that fight was that close and I dont like PBF at all. DlH had some great fights and took on all comers, but he was not a special fighter.

He was easily one of the better fighters in boxing? Ok, it's one thing to say he was still one of the better fighters in the division at the time. But, in boxing?

Why? What made him still one better fighters in boxing at that time? Because, his name was Oscar De la Hoya? Of because a year prior he KO'd a guy who did **** above 147 besides beating a shot Vargas? Exactly what was it? He was 2-2 in the previous 4 years going into the fight, really should have been 1-3...Again maybe one of the better fighters in the division. But, not in boxing bro.
