but if your back is turned the other guy can't throw combinations into the back of the head.

also it looks like khan got nailed with a shot that turned him

if i remember right khan was standing and facing the same direction as when maidana started his attack, maidana is the one that was sidestepping with those looping lefts, maybe trying to get his right arm free from khan's grip

i have yet to see the bit where khan turns his back to maidana
        need to rewatch the fight

First off, any time fighters arms get entangled, he breaks them up. No matter what. Watch any of his fights as proof - Khan-Maidana, Floyd-Hatton, Hopkins-Calzaghe, etc.

Further, he does ******ed *****, he lacks good judgment. Example - DQ'ing Soto after Soto destroyed Lorenzo and barely tapped him on the back of the head as he went down. And it wasn't that he DQ'd him, it's that, if you recall, it took Cortez literally over 5 minutes to figure out what to do, all the while poor Lorenzo is laying in the ring, clearly badly injured bleeding all over the place with his nose so badly broken it was on his cheek and he was not allowed any doctor/trainer to treat him until Cortez figured out what to do.

            That clearly shows incompetence.

We can go on and on with examples.

            This is the best option:
He's not crooked, he tries to be fair but he's incompetent

He means well and he's done great jobs in many of his fights, probably the majority...

            This post right here.

He should not officiate fights with in-fighters ever, and should get no more title bouts. He's getting old. There's nothing malicious about him, he's just not too sharp anymore.

There was more than one time in the 10th when khan turned his back.

Maidana threw an elbow after the break and that's unacceptable. You want elbows? Go watch the UFC, this is boxing not some street brawl.

Kahn offered his glove, Miadana swung at him.
Their arms got tangled up and Maidana proceeds to hit him in the back of the head...

I call it like I see it, Cortez did the right thing and Maidana was being dirty.
Who cares? He was already nice enough to touch gloves with Khan after the ref gave instructions in the middle of the ring.

What, now if Khan leans over with his lips puckered up for a kiss, Maidana should kiss him?

BTW I picked He's not crooked, he tries to be fair but he's incompetent. I think he tries his best but just isn't good enough anymore.

I was thinking throughout the fight, after the point deduction, he should have deducted a point from Khan for holding Maidana's head down because "this is not the UFC", and fans would have been less critical of him and I thought that would have been fair. Which is what he refers to himself as. All those warnings throughout the fight, and no point deducted form Khan.

How many warnings did he give Maidana for elbows? I didn't recall him warning him at all or maybe he did but I must have missed it. I know Maidana's corner begged Cortez to take a point away from Khan. And Roach was the one who told Cortez to keep an eye Maidana's elbow. Then the round right after, Cortez takes a point away for an elbow that didn't even land on Khan.

because elbows are more dangerous than clinching someones head

and maidana hitting him with the elbow didn't help
