Is Joe Cortez a competent and fair referee?

My biggest complaint of Cortez is that he's disruptive to the action. To me, the third man in the ring should be virtually invinsible except when needed. Joe Cortez makes it a point to be seen and heard and to be part of the action.

It's amazing that he still is hired to work high profile fights. I think the general consensus amongst boxing fans is, that he's incompetant and has more bad nights than he does good ones. However, the boxing press, commentators, promoters, insiders, etc. seem to hold back any criticism of him. I'd like to know what Harold Lederman, Dan Rafael, Lou Dibella think publicly of him..

Look at Katsidis, he's got the reputation as a die in the ring type and the ref jumped in after about 30 seconds.

Khan has the reputation of a fragile glass chinned pussy and this guy lets Maidana take 10 years off his life just so he can make it out of the round when he's clearly hurt.

      Joke Khortez.
huge difference in Katsidis-JMM and khan-Maidana.

First off, Katsidis was losing badly and was clearly out of the fight at that point.

Khan was clearly winning the fight and never touched the canvas.

If khan would have went down, then made it up all wobbly for example, and still wasn't throwing back, Cortez would have stopped it without question. But the fact is Khan survived, was moving and made it to the final round.

JuanMa Lopez vs Rogers Mtwaga was far worse than Khan-Maidana, but a similar example. Lopez was falling all over the place and using the ropes to keep himself up. Khan didn't do that, he was just rubber legs.

Dude. Oscar/Freddie/Con KNOW Cortez sucks. But they also know he can be bribed. And that's why they picked him.

How else do you think an incompetent moron like Cortez get fights like Con vs. Maidana, Floyd vs. Hatton?

            There is a huge difference.

One ref was on the take, the other one was not.

I don't believe that GBP has brided anyone directly. There's really no proof to back up those outlandish claims. You guys having "a hunch" that corruption and bridery exist with Cortez and GBP does not actually mean it's true...

Show me some verifiable evidence or it didn't happen. The onus is on you guys to prove something not GBP/Khan/Roach/ Cortez et al...

If Kahn was out on his feet then they would have stopped it. Even though Khan was hurt, he wasn't out on his feet. I thought he did excellent to survive and I'm glad Cortez didn't stop it.

How many times have we seen refs stop the fight prematurely?

but why? do you think he would?
i truly believe that if the roles were reversed in that round, cortez would have stopped the fight.

i'm not saying there's bribery going on like cortez got a wad of cash for his actions, but I think there's a history of cortez interfering in fights and it's always on behalf og the house fighter.

Not crooked, just a completely inept ref.
