I can see what you mean except Wlad really is no Barrera at this point... He has struggled against some pretty shady competition. KO'ed by an ancient Sanders, punches himself out against a nobody in Brewster, and looks horrible even in victory against 'Touch of Sleep' (who even Joe Mesi who is not known for his power was able to KO in one round)... So I think that we cannot look at Wlad as THAT much of a favorite (although he is certainly still the favorite)...

It just goes to show that, no matter what you're born with, you can still **** it away if you try hard enough....or in his case, if you don't.
Anyway, you can blame the Brewster loss, and mediocre showing against Williamson on Vlad...but the loss to Sanders was simply a kid stepping into the ring with an awesome fighter who, despite his age and laziness, was still more than all but a few top heavyweights could've handled at the time, and Vlad wasn't one of them.

Originally posted by StickmanI disagree that Sanders was "ancient", or that he could be considered shady competition. Sanders, especially for the first couple of rounds, is one of the most dangerous heavyweights on the planet. His iron chin, blazing handspeed, natural talent, accuracy, devastating power, orientation, size, and ability to make a hole for that straight left could've easily made him undisputed and unified champ of the world. He was lacking only in dedication, and conditioning. I can't think of another heavyweight in the last 20 years (maybe even longer than that) who had all the "right stuff" that Sanders had. And I honestly believe that, had Sanders been in top condition against Rahman, he'd have finished him off, fought Lewis, beat Lewis and been champ for at least a few years, provided he stayed in condition while he was on top.

Wow is that ever a pile of horse ****.
Sanders wasn't even ranked when Wlad fought him, and his biggest fight was a KO loss to Rahman.
He's also been KO'd in two rounds by NATE TUBBS.
The fact is he didn't maxamize his potential, and after getting stopped by Rahman, he had two more fights in 2 years before getting into the ring with Wlad at 37 years old.
He was the very definition of a fringe contender.

And I still think you could wake an old, fat, out of shape Sanders up from a sound sleep, toss gloves and a mouth piece at him and shove him into the ring in his PJ's, and he'd lay waste to about 90% of the heavyweights in the world within the first 2 rounds. Of course he'd be falling over at the start of the 3rd.....GAWD, that man's laziness makes me angry.

Unfortunatly, fighters aren't ranked on how you THINK they'd do in random hypothetical senarios.
All we have to go on was what happened, and that was a 37 year old Sanders who (had only fought twice in 2 years after getting KO'd by Rahman) got into the ring with Wlad UNRANKED by the 3 major organizations at the time, and he scored a resounding KO.
Maybe he had great potential, but all it ever amounted to was him being a frindge contender who was KO'd in 2 rounds by Nate Tubbs.
