Things started to get confusing when there was more than one recognised title belt and different men held different versions of the world title. The Ring tried to end the confusion by awarding a Ring title to whoever they regarded as the true champion, based on lineage, which, as I said, was historical fact. That was how the idea that there was an actual lineal title, as well as a lineage of champions, began to form in the minds of fans and journalists. The Ring gave up on their endeavour in the late 90s, I believe. They no longer claim lineal championship status for their title holders.
But the idea that somewhere out there, in the hinterland between legend and reality, there are such things as lineal titles, that can only be won or lost in the ring, persists in the minds of boxing fans and is exploited by promoters and master manipulators like Tyson Fury.

Should be a great fight though. Hard to believe that Dubois is only 26.
Might be another 20+ years before we see a "Unified" Heavyweight Champion again, however; so keep your eyes on who the LINIAL Heavyweight Boxing Champion is.
Too many fans here had taken their eyes off that during the frustrating Fury era.
