Hard punchs cause more damage but some effective punch could drop you unconiouse.
if someone hit you one punch and you past out you cant really tell how hard is you punch but if you stood brawling and they is damage done then you know how hard the person hits.
but in case of Julian Jackson KOing Graham Graham was never the same because of the damage done from that punch.
not nesseccery mean a KO from a punch is hard puncher you could see a fight Shane Mosely vs Mauel Gomes during the 11 round Lopez endure Shane's punchs but just one punch to the chin and Gomez didnt know where he was

I have no doubt that Shavers had the harder single punch but Tyson's punches were more effective due his speed and technique.
Shavers had something like 68 KO's on his record with around 25 of those coming in the first round, his threw looping power shots and would knock his opponents through the canvas.
They are similar in statue and weight but Tyson had far superior hand speed, technique and overall ability therefore IMO his punches may not have been as hard in overall power but they were more effective especially in the upper echelons of the division.Last edited by MickyHatton; 04-01-2007, 09:24 AM.

No his punch wasn't what it has been built up to be, it just seemed that way when bolstered by his style and his other attributes. Quickness, timing, and accuracy. A heavyweight with average power would have scored major knockouts with those attributes. Tyson with his very good but not great power, and all of those assets, is a tough fight for anyone.
It's my opinion that Shavers, Baer or Foreman even at 50 would have walked through the weak chinned McBride. Tyson's power alone was very good but not great, or he would have seriously messed him up with raw power alone with the first punch he connected with.
Tyson in his prime was explosive, and a definite knockout artist but I don't think the actual force he produced is anything like what a Baer, Foreman, Shavers, etc were capable of.

Al these gus sparred with tyson late in his career when tyson had lost his speed.
Forget what sparring partners say, its wat we see in the ring that counts.
If Tyson had great KO power without his speed, timing etc, then he should have walked through Williams, and McBride.
Shavers never had great technique but was still KOing opponents into his 50's.

Firstly, i only disagree with Achilles with one thing, Tyson did have ''great'' power, not good, but great power. Floyd Patterson had Tyson's speed and accuracy, but he didn't have his power. Many fighters have had Tyson's speed and timing, but weren't able to explosively KO people with decent chins like Iron Mike. It's one thing to have amazing speed accuracy, it's another to severely hurt people with body shots, and knock them out cold, break a jaw etc.

Rahman also said Toney hits harder then Holyfield, he was knocked out cold with one punch from Lewis, he took many bombs from Sanders, so there is no way in hell Sanders even comes close to Lewis.
So what keeps him from being anywhere near Lewis in terms of power (and thats ALL we're talking about here), because you said so?
Sanders power belongs right up there with Lewis or anyone else in his era. A journeyman fighter Ive talked to who sparred with both said Sanders was the hardest hitter he's face in sparring, stronger than Tua. The guy was a killer puncher.
