Ask yourself why Johnson would fight Battling Jim for $1k while turning down $20k for Jeannette. A guy who Jeannette defeated twice that same year.

Are you trying to say that there were no title fights in NY when all fights were technically deemed exhibitions?

The criticism I have regarding Dempsey are backed up by solid proof. Compare that to someone here who still won't admit that Johnson agreed to fight Jeannette for the title in the face of solid proof. That's simply lying.


I'm simply not going to pretend that Dempsey walked on water like his fans do. His criticisms are well earned. Still, as I've always stated, he was iconic and a boxing great. But if anyone can't deal with the criticisms, they need to learn to face reality or perhaps find a new sport to follow, in my humble opinion.

When the money was there JJ would do the fight, simple as. War stopped that fight. There's no claim to anything different. It was 1914, WWI stopped Johnson-Mcvey.

Yes I was referring to you, you're absolutely correct about Johnson signing to fight McVey,Jeannette,and Langford.
Dempsey is my favourite fighter,but that certainly does not make him immune from criticism,he must shoulder some of the blame for not defending against Wills.
The question is how much ? I think you both lack some objectivity on those respective names,but Ghost O D has a by far the worst case, to the point where he thinks Johnson ducked Kid Cotton his protege and sparring partner!
