At least Vitali didn't quit on his stool that time around and was willing to keep fighting when he was stopped on a bad cut.

I am seeing a lot of Muhammad Ali and it surprises me. Had someone asked me this question before I read this thread I would have answered: "Na, he was notorious for taking rounds off to compensate for his lack of stamina (poor training)."

In lieu of many of these comments I guess I need to reassess my own opinion.

The switch to fighting for the HW Championship of the World certainly demands a different mind set (mental preparation) but three weeks is enough time to make that adjustment; to get ready mentally.
        - -Vit was Tyson's 3 week emergency replacement after he ditched the undercard where he never should have been placed.

One week later Lewie's opponent "hurt his tltty" to pull out, so Vit agreed to be a two week emergency replacement after winning 3 fruitless lawsuits vs Lewie for ducking him.

Typical boxing dirty underside promo. Lewie had 5 more bouts planned before retirement saw the writing on the wall when the WBC was a couple days from stripping him for ducking Vit and retired.

        Jus da fax!

            - -And never once did Ali dance and jab for 15 rds. 8 rds at the most.

He was also lazy in training camps, hence his many poor showings in his traditional prime years, ie Buster Mathis.

I think everybody who has either boxed at some level or atleast done some training, has tried to mimick Ali's foot movement and we all know how taxing it is physically.

And we're average, if not below average sized men. Ali was of course 6'3+ and almost 100 kilo's, it was simply remarkable how a man that size could keep up that kind of movement. In the 15 round era.

                      Vitali

I believe Vitali is a strong and rather underrated name in the discussion. I've seen quite a few fights, where he has thrown between 800 and 1000 punches, which is quite a lot for a heavy.
