Well I agreed that excuse was probably true. It was the other ones that were suspect.

Totally agree Scott. And as he got older, stuck around too long and lost more often, the excuses increased with each loss.

I rewatched the third Bowe-Holyfield fight yesterday and I must say, I don't think it was an excuse or lie. Something was definitely wrong with him.

What he said after the Lewis fight is silly. Today I'll rewatch the first fight against Moorer.

Hep C..... Is'nt that the one predominant with intravenous drug users?

Strongly suggests he may have started injecting peds, as far back as the early 90's
Was he really the Lance Armstrong of boxing?
Because there wasn't a lot said about it, if he was

Tyson mentions the silence surrounding Holyfield's implication with steroids in his biography:

"Part of the problem is that people were responding to images not reality. . .he had the good-guy image. He was the one who strolled to the ring singing gospel songs. It didn't make huge headlines when he was later implicated in a steroid ring out of Mobile, Alabama."

His excuse the Moorer fight was bona fide but it ties in to what your saying. He was forced to retire after being diagnosed with a 'non compliant left ventricle' which prevented adequate amounts of oxygen from being pumped to the muscles. In a following check up he was also found to have an 'atrial septal defect', which is a hole between the two chambers of the heart.

He made an unlikely return to the ring when the first complaint seemed to have miraculously healed. He claimed at the time that the 'faith healer' Benny Hinn had cured him during a Christian revival in Philadelphia. Later though he shifted his story and said that he believed that he was misdiagnosed due to being on morphine at the time he was checked.

Although it's a contentious subject in medical studies, 'non compliant left ventricle' has been linked to use of Human Growth Hormone. As soon as he was diagnosed in 1994 Dr. Margaret Goodman, chairman of the medical advisory board of Nevada Athletic Commission, pulled him before the commission and questioned him about possible HGH use. He denied it of course, but the problem there is that he was never going to fail a drugs test because boxers weren't tested for HGH. (I don't know if that has now changed).

Later during the investigation into Applied Pharmacy in 2004, 'Evan Fields' picked up three vials of testosterone, two vials of Glukor and injection supplies, and five vials of Saizen, a brand of HGH. He also had a follow-up visit for hypogonadism, a condition known to be caused by testosterone abuse.

I'd say that the heart defect was down to HGH use and cleared when he stopped using or changed brand. In light of what we know, your view that he contracted Hep C through injecting banned substances is more then plausible.

Yeah, the evidence is really too incriminating to look at it from a rational view and deny that its not at least likely he took steroids at some point of his career. That combined with his physique, I mean come on, even as he declined in skills and was in his 40's he was still incredibly big and lean and always weighed around the same weight. Dedication sure, but probably assisted.

Im a huge holyfield fan and he is my #1 favorite ever, but i wont let my fanboy bind me..

Holyfield no doubt juiced in his career,,,

I have watched every fight, and i think he probably started juicing after bowe 1 or moorer 1.......

Holyfield i do believe was clean during his cruiser run and early heavy run...
But i think he realized he needed to get "bigger" for the truely superheavys like bowe and lewis, so he started juicing, especially after the first bowe fight, when holyfield fought his heart out, but it was not enough to deal with bowe's combination of size and skill set

Or i think it was after the moorer fight, when he was stricken with the heart issues and HEP C...
