Well if you guys dont like it, then dont come into the thread if its a waste of time,,

I just thought this would be a good discussion and something fresh, since we usually just talk about heavys and such on history section..

I understand that there is no way of telling for sure, and its all based on opinion but nonetheless its something to talk about

It is frivolous, all boxing talk is pretty frivolous really. Although many on here take it deadly serious.

I have a question for some of the older posters about monzon,, I watched his fights, but he was before my time, was he really that technically sound to be a p4p #1... not dis*****g his status as a top mw, but i always thought he was alittle crude, and not as sound of a fighter as say hagler or hopkins,,
        what do you guys think
I'm not an older poster but from watching his fights I would say he was the best middleweight of all time. He certainly wasn't the most fluid and graceful but he got the job done. I can't think of another fighter who had a style, and a gameplan based on that style, and pretty much stuck to it round after round after round.

Who else would you have ahead of Monzon in the early to mid 70s, Duran?

Where would you place Harry Greb in the pantheon of middleweights?

Is the lack of footage an important factor for you?

Sometimes guys do look a certain way. The fight game is rife with deception. The illusion that the guy you are fighting looks easy to beat because.......

But sometimes this is a trap. Ali and Jones did everything wrong yet made it work for them because of superhuman abilities... Right now there is a clip of Ali that one of the posters has up showing one of my favorite sequences: Ali gets thrown at and avoids every punch with shoulder movement. Most guys could never do that and hence would look very hittable.

In my opinion Monzon looked very ordinary. I tend to think this was because he did everything so well and had no real weaknesses. Also, again an opinion! Monzon was deceptively rangy...I can tell you as a martial artist, fighting guys who were quick and long in the limbs can be a *****. Monzon always looked heavy in the hands but rangy explosive. This is a veryhard type of puncher to deal with

Hagler was the number one guy with Ring Mag for something like six years in the early eighties. Just thought I would throw that out there.

              After that Chavez.

              After that Pernell

              Oscar

              Roy

i just can't find the almanac with the years. i am going on memory.

Based on that list Hagler is the most consistent fighter of the last 35 years.

Lack of footage is very important. You have to look at Mickey Walker and perhaps base his ability on him, as Greb was better than him. I doubt he'd be able to beat Monzon. No idea where I'd place Greb to be honest.

I personally cannot believe that Pongsalek Wongjongkam makes it back to the p4p rankings after YEARS. under-rated legend.
