Age of death of top heavyweight by decade analysis .

Below is a listing of the age at death of my picks of the top 20 heavyweights foe each decade. I did this list some time ago and I'm sure I would make adjustments if I was to do this exercise today so I am not too **** about the actual lists except to say they broadly reflect the top heavyweights of the time.
One point to note is that a fighter is included in only one decade. Also, if I recall correctly, i subtracted the birth year from the death year, firstly to be more accurate in the long run and also because it was easier! Comments, corrections etc warmly encouraged.

Dempsey aged well! As I said, I subtracted birth year from year of death so some will be slightly askew but overall the averages should pan out.

I once looked at a similar chart regarding baseball players from the early days of the sport. A lot died young due to chronic diseases of various sorts... made me wonder whether this was keeping with the times as a whole? or a reflection on the characters who were part of the baseball landscape back then.

I have the same questions with fighters. And then we have to consider fighting itself, did it take a toll? I suspect not so much... Despite the toughness and the amount of violence one was subject to in the ring. Most occupations took their toll... How did carrying blocks of ice up tenement stairs? or coal mines? measure up to boxing? People were more resigned to their fate back then...

To state the obvious, we must remember that these death rates don't take into account the years lost to dementia before death.
