Honestly I think it varies from person to person. Some say its a straight and other say it's more of an overhand over the jab (without massive looping) Some old school guys showed me it as a straight but hearing it as a punch that's meant to cross over a jab makes more sense to me.

Either way the one thing it is not is a punch that crosses over your own body. I think that's the most common misconception, among beginners anyway.

Let's say two orthodox guys are facing each other...it's almost impossible to throw a punch over your opponent's left hand and not have it cross your body as well.

I thought I knew but I looked it up. I was wrong The right cross is a counterpunch right hand that crosses over the opponents arm. If the opponent throws a jab and you slip it your right hand counter punch crosses over or under the extended arm of your opponent and hopefully lands on his chin. The straight right travels directly to the target.

So southpaws can also throw a left cross and overhands can be crosses but not all crosses are overhands

Yeah I mean idk...I just always assumed when you load up the hips, you naturally end up with a cross...it's almost impossible for me to load my hips and not having what I consider a right cross...the straight right to me was always like a right handed jab, no real hip load, just a quick sharp shot.

I am not sure of the exact terminology though.
