              seven samurai
              yojimbo
              sanjuro
              13 assassins
              the last samurai

how Japan went from alpha samurai to consuming anime and not ****ing their women is beyond me.

kikuchiyo's speech scolding the samurai is peak kino.

yea everyone hates on the last samurai because of tom but overall the movie was pretty damn good.
the scene where the Japanese army was gunning down the samurai with gatling guns and tears in their eyes is also peak kino.

... it's a good historical movie -- it illustrates some sort of "paradigm shift" in Japan's society... (and Tom Cruise always is as cold as a fish)...

yea it was a shift in societal structure. but samurai culture carried over for a while, mainly the Japanese evoking the samurai code and discipline into every aspect of life. the Japanese imperial army still carried katana swords into battle during WW2. then after WW2 came another paradigm shift...

... a "paradigm shift" sometimes is politically-driven only... but a true "social-cultural shift" needs much more than politics, it seems...
