[REAL TALK] Majority of Americans want to scrap the 1st *********, Polling finds

Majority of Americans Want to Scrap First *********, Polling Finds

New Campaign For Free Speech polling results demonstrate just how vulnerable free speech protections are in the United States.

    CFS polling results show:

51% of Americans think the First ********* is outdated and should be rewritten. The First ********* protects your right to free speech, free assembly, and freedom of religion, among other things.

48% believe “hate speech” should be illegal. (“Hate speech” is not defined—we left it up to the individual participant.) Of those, about half think the punishment for “hate speech” should include possible jail time, while the rest think it should just be a ticket and a fine.

80% don’t actually know what the First ********* really protects. Those polled believed this statement is true: “The First ********* allows anyone to say their opinion no matter what, and they are protected by law from any consequences of saying those thoughts or opinions.”

It’s actually not true. The First ********* prevents the government from punishing you for your speech (with exceptions such as yelling “fire” in a crowded area to induce panic).

But more broadly, freedom of speech does not mean you are protected from social consequences for your speech. You may have the right to say something extreme or hateful and not get thrown in jail, but others in society have the right to shun you.

    What explains these results?

We believe there are at least two factors at play. One is the obvious polarization of politics and the media. While many who identify as conservative may dislike the reporting of CNN and would likely favor sanctions for “fake news,” many progressives or ******** may feel the same way towards Fox News.

Second, we hear much about “hate speech.” Although the term is never defined, most agree that it should be opposed, rebuked, and criticized. But should it be punished by the government? If the government is in charge of determining what is hate speech, then it inevitably becomes political—a weapon that can be used to punish people on the other side of an issue.

We believe it is time to reconnect with the central tenets of the First *********. Free speech is a non-partisan issue that has always been a cornerstone of our democracy and critical for a free society.

And it only took 2 to 3 years. That's what's so mindboggelingly absurd and shocking about this all.

We are that f'ing ******. That dumb.

In terms of this being a referendum on our aptitudes and capacities it's HORRIFYING. The case against us is that we're expendably ******. Keep that in mind. Things just got much, much worse for humanity and any other intelligence or group out there who has been trying to make a case for us.

The right to free speech is the most important right we have as Americans and is the mechanism for which society is able to function. If we don’t have the right to speak, then what recourse do we have to resolve disagreements?

I'd honestly lose my love for the US is we lost the 1st *********. I didn't even realize until recently how many other major countries don't have free speech. It's a disgusting concept to me.

Truly sad how the party that promoted freedom of speech and demonstration for so many decades is now trying to cut off it's nose to spite it's face. The ********ic party was the party of progress, and now it's simply become a black hole.

What did you expect when you replaced most of your population with completely random people with no cultural comprehension of free speech/democracy/etc? If not hardline socialism and demanding people be arrested for questioning folklore beliefs?

The suicide button was pressed a couple of generations ago. People are just in denial. You cannot reverse outcomes like this.

You can either balkanize or sink with the ship. I concentrate pretty much all of my political effort on balkanization movements.

Your girl Lizzie Warren says she will push for federal hate speech laws if she's elected President.
