been hearing a lot about this girl lately. i mean she's not wrong (nor is she 100% right) but that overly dramatic tone and the fact that they make her 'the face of the new movement' and portray her as a real life activist who knows the pain despite her being a 16 year old from a wealthy family living in a rich 1st world country won't let me take her seriously.

Her message or the message of pollution, climate change and the destruction of nature is a serious message. 'But I have no idea why she seems to be being idolized by people' and I think she has been abit hypocritical with her statements 'She is having the time of her life traveling the world and receiving all of this attention' her social media pages look like a teenager who craves attention.

But without a shadow of a doubt I am 100% behind the campaign, it is common sense to me 'You do not need to be a environmental scientist to understand the negative impact humans are having on the planet/nature'.

      This, all day

Alan Kurdi, 2015, was a good example of the MORAL OUTRAGE tactic (this was the small Syrian refugee boy, drowned ashore; photos of his body went all around the press). Instantly, we saw how this photo was used as political capital, to show the consequences of "coercive", "military", "imperialist" immigration policies, etc etc. The Left, generally, DO NOT WANT argumentation, or reasoned justifications. In this sense, it is a shame that Greta is being used as a puppet and a shield, for to criticise her on any level is to invoke the 'How dare you!' response.

Paradoxically, if you point any of this out and can somehow get past the moral outrage, you may be told that Greta actually has good points to make and that we should listen to her on that basis... but if you then try critiquing those points, your political opponent will prevaricate, and you will then see that it is not about the points at all, but rather it is about the inspirational and "hopeful" qualities that Greta brings to the table. At which point, we are looking at the same thing, but with different eyes... you are right, Greta is essentially an "idol" for the Left

I don't think that Greta should be immune from criticism.

I've noticed that when people criticise her, they are immediately attacked in ways which I don't think are appropriate. Her critics are attacked on the grounds of their ***, their colour, their age. Her critics are attacked by using nonsense weasel words like 'afraid' and '***ist' etc etc.

People who defend Greta are very, VERY quick to bleat on about how she is just a kid, so people shouldn't be able to criticise her.

If she wants the immunity from criticism that is normally granted to children, then she needs to be treated like a child in other ways too. In other words, she can sit down, shut up, and let adults have these conversations. If she wants to stand up and be counted as a grown up voice then she also becomes fair game for adult criticism.

Either treat her like a little kid, or don't - but this cherry picking of when to do so is kinda nauseating. A figurehead or spokesperson is always going to be in the firing line. Trying to escape that by using a child is a cynical thing to do.

That's not to say that I agree with the people who criticise her - or agree with the way they do so. A lot of them are doing the wrong thing by attacking her personally, and not attacking her ideas.

Personally I think she is a terrible choice as a spokesperson. She is polarising, too easily dismissed because she seems overwrought and emotional. She preaches to the choir, but drives away the very people who she needs to be bringing onboard. We don't need more divisive figures.

You may honor the memory of Mussolini, but if Greta’s parents are anti*******s, I can’t see anything wrong in that.
Obviously you're playing dumb but I'll intentionally take the bait for those who are new to the topic:

The "anti-*******" movement has little to do with Mussolini.

The name is derived from the German KDP, which viewed Western capitalists as the "true *******s".

They actually view Mussolini's hybrid system as the highest/final evolution of capitalism before it blossoms into full communism.

Antifaschistische Aktion (German: [ˌantifaˈʃɪstɪʃə ʔakˈtsi̯oːn]), commonly known under its abbreviation Antifa (German: [ˈantifaː]), was an organisation affiliated with the Communist Party of Germany (KPD) that existed from 1932 to 1933.

Under the leadership of Ernst Thälmann, the KPD had become a staunchly Stalinist party, and it had been largely controlled and funded by the Soviet leadership since 1928; the party had adopted the position that it was "the only anti-******* party" while it regarded all other parties, and especially the Social ********ic Party (SPD), as "*******s."[1][2] The KPD did not view "fascism" as a specific political movement, but primarily as the final stage of capitalism, and "anti-fascism" was therefore synonymous with anti-capitalism.
Greta and her parents are not environmentalists. They do not promote environmentally sound ideas. Environmentalists do not spend their lives launching tirades against Western countries which have already dramatically reversed their emissions levels to below 1980s levels. They do not "sue" nations over climate change while leaving the top global polluters out of the lawsuit.

Since the sole remaining growth factor in US/EU pollution is mass immigration, they do not promote radical communist open-borders movements.

They are your standard antifa using climate change to take advantage of scientifically illiterate Americans.

And the parents should be in jail for taking advantage of a child with autism who looks visibly confused/impaired without a script and apparently grew up suffering from severe depression believing the world would end by the time she reached adulthood.

But the talk of her parents being AFA-activists is just nonsense, and them "taking advantage of a child with autism" is merely offensive.

I'm an old man by now, so I don't have to worry about the future. But I fully understand today's frustration among young people. They have reasons to be worried.
So, with or without Greta, the movement she has started won't disappear.
"The scientific consensus that humans are causing global warming is likely to have passed 99%."

                  It's not about Greta.
Perhaps you two are young enough to see the year 2050.
If so, I'm pretty sure you will have come to other conclusions by then.
