This article doesnt go into detail but the guy purposefully trapped and lured the teens into his house to kill them. Its not self defense when you plan and lure the kids into your house and then execute them

I read about this. He was lying in wait for them to come in, shot the first one and then shot the second one at which point his rifle jammed so he dragged her to the basement and used a pistol to shoot her in the head.
It wasn't self defense, it was an execution.

"During closing arguments Tuesday, prosecutor Pete Orput likened the killings to deer hunting from a tree stand as he outlined the preparations Smith took before slaying the teens: he stocked up on water, snacks, extra ammo, a book and a tarp in his basement, and even moved his truck away from his home to make it appear he was away."
He moved the bodies from where they fell and dragged them onto the tarp to avoid staining his carpet and was heard toying with the victims as he shot them to death. Claiming self defence is an entirely specious argument, his were not the actions of a man fearing for his safety.

After all, they had a history of breaking into homes and stealing. There's a lot of sympathy for them because they were cute kids, but they shouldn't have been stealing from people.
Of course, they didn't deserve to die, but let's face it: they were taking a risk doing what they did.

First-degree murder means it was premeditate right? He obviously set this whole thing up
The kids shouldn't have broken into the house, but he baited them in and seemed to be ready to kill them.
They deserved to be punished, but he took it way to far.
