Basically the answer is this: If the boundaries are well defined and consistently enforced then it doesn't matter what the punishment is, it will be effective. If punishments are arbitrary or inconsistent then the form they take doesn't make a difference.

Spanking your kids?

I don't like the idea of hitting kids, but I got a good slap around the bum when I was young if I misbehaved at school, or hit my brother. The fear of upsetting my parents ensured I was a good student, and got good grades too.
Discipline and respect are rare these days. I'm all for tough parenting, the birch at school, and military service. It may sort out the bullies, chavs, and criminals that populate this once great country.

I had a teacher who went to school during the days when Nuns could smack the kids around and he said stuff like add didnt exist back then, now magically it is everywhere.

I was hit as a kid, by both my parents and my grandma some of the time...I think sometimes its needed, kids need to know the diffrence between whats right and whats wrong, how to act and how not to. If you just let them run wild then expect them to end up on maury povitch.
Kids nowadays are soft, I didnt even have that bad of an up bringing when it came to being punished, my mom and dad were part of that baby boomer generation, kids back then had ALOT more responsibilities and punishment was severe compared to what I had.

When you look them in the eyes, children **** in their pants. You don't need to beat em up to get the respect.
