The only thing that is stopping real political violence in the US right now are laws and punishments. If you took those away there would be serious political violence in the US right now. I think you probably have to go back to the civil war for another time where this would be true.
Hard to say about the future. I do think if things keep going there will at least be some skirmishes.

yeah there will be. i said this at the start of pandemic and got laughed at, youll see in the history books in 50 years that covid was the trigger for what will be one of the worst periods in human history.
