You were unaware that many states are struggling with the costs of law enforcement and incarceration? That, y'know, they got budgets? That they need to prioritise some services over others?

Choices are either finding cheaper ways of doing things or raising taxes, and nobody likes paying more taxes either... So what they supposed to cut to keep these dudes in prison that are just gonna come out and do it again? Education? Public housing provision? Mental Health or drug services, Family support? Cutting any of all of em leads to - guess what - More effing crime and more criminals that you can't afford to send to prison.

And these issues ain't just affecting Blue states either - policing is gradually moving in that direction across the board - although the crisis is worst in densely populated urban areas which tend to lean ********.

You starting to understand the complexity of the issue? I know it'd be great to have simple solutions to problems like this but the world just ain't that straightforward.

Like I say, I don't have the answers, but at least I can go some way towards laying out the parameters of the problem.

It's not new. I remember before the pandemic someone posted a video of people inside of a walgreens with garbage bags just filling them up with cosmetics. You could hear someone shout "YOURE BEING ROBBED" and an employee walked away lol

I don't doubt some employees give no fooks, but I find it super hard to believe cops aren't dealing with shoplifting under $950 like OP is posting. If so that's a crazy fooking law & I'mma have to make a weekly stop in CA to pick up $949 worth of sh^t.

Mainly I'm just trying to find the middle ground in this situation once my question. With every issue in the US you gotta deal with R's or D's proclaiming, on brand, that everything is the end of the world cuz famous people are allegedly drinking children's blood or that everything is fine despite homeless people pooping in the cereal aisle of grocery stores in Portland.

Well no doubt the police kinda suck in general. In Vegas they are out on the roads giving bs traffic tickets like crazy meanwhile the strip smells like Snoop & Willie Nelson are performing & I've never seen them hand out one ticket for smoking weed on the strip, which is illegal.
