Fight Night 2004 question

I'm babysitting and we're playing the first FN game on Xbox.

My question is, how do you unlock things like Trunks, Gloves, shoes etc in 'create a boxer' mode? No career mode has been completed yet so maybe you have to do that first to unlock everything?

If I remember rightly you have to win fights to get money and buy them from the shop later.

Yeah but that only counts for the career mode fighter I think.

I want all of them to be available when i'm creating a new fighter. But they're always locked.

The knockdowns on FN3 were boring, no matter how you hit them on the way down, it didn't change the way they fell.

I just finished career mode with Ali. A few things have been unlocked, such as a couple of trunks and all the arenas.

I guess I'll have to keep playing career mode to eventually unlock everything?
