... It's also about the "Russian School" of boxing -- it looks minimalist but it isn't... it's about efficiently balancing the whole body with movement, force and speed...
when did you see him hurt somebody with an arm punch?
there doens't have to be a drastic motion in the legs to generate power. all you have to do is shift your weight at the proper time [to accellerate through your target] to make a punch "not an arm punch."
golovkin has been throwing punches and combinations since he was a boy. that's muscle memory that you cannot turn off. the shifting of the weight [starting with your feet, and using your hips to generate power,] is completely natural at this point. he does not have to think about it.
The second punch. Of course he was stunned by the first but you can see a drastic difference in the way he rotates compared to the first.

Remember Lemeshev!
... and on top of this it's about being a genuine "talent"... about being "gifted"...
... just like any other top-of-the-top fighter was...
... this kind of boxer may lose fights or even get KOd, but he still remain "outstanding"... (I will not give any examples from the history)...

is that why they come out of the amateurs not punching with power, and fighting like amateurs, and often take on american trainers who teach them how to punch and box professionally?

There is a good point here... As we all know that they are not scoring (any more) the knockdowns at the amateurs... (When Lemeshev was active they did score them)...
And: it's obvious that Russian amateurs need good trainers from "professional boxing", but this doesn't change their basic approach to the sport...

I think it was more so him driving off his rear foot and Stevens being partially off balance, inhibiting his body to prepare for decent a bracing.
Nonetheless, Golovkin definitely adds supination his left hook. You'll see it all the time when he hits the bag or the punch shield, it's almost as if he focuses on it solely at times.
..."why isn't he a 'great' puncher? And what would make him one"?
Simply put he hasn't fought any great fighters and his opponents often get up.
Its ok to knock people down but great punchers knock people out. So far against his best opposition he gets tko's! I've seen him hit guys on the chin and they feel it no doubt but their still there. He gets caught reaching when he goes to the jaw, when he goes down stairs he gets himself in better position to dig in.
I'd like to see him use a double jab to get closer than come with combos off the double jab.
This chopping down punch he's starting to use is a very dangerous motion.
Hitting people's heads like that can cause damage to the fists that don't have body weight behind them. Its like the fists are isolated without the shoulders and back to help absorb the shocks from impact.
I like him but I'm not putting in the Robinson elite yet, lets see him perform with his next 3 opponents which should be better than the past ones.

No shit? You're "not putting in the Robinson elite yet"?
No more no less? ... But SRR is rated as TBE by many pundits...
You seem to think I care what others think?
If you don't agree with my opinions its ok by me, everyone can think as they please.
I like GGG and have watched his past 6 or 7 bouts. I don't see alot of improvement and I see him abondoning his defense once he feels he can't be hurt. Thats not smart at all because anyone can get cut by a punch or head clash so defense is always 100% of the time used.
I hope he gets to fight Cotto & Canelo!!
