    Rotator Cuff injury...

    I was training yesterday and after finishing on the heavybag felt fine in general but I was fatiguing in my right shoulder quite badly for some reason, and later noticed I had a pain in the top area of my shoulder, especially when I tried to lift my arm above my head or do similar movements.

    Today it's pretty strange because I CAN lift my arm up but when I lift both arms up I feel much more pressure in the right shoulder, and at the maximum range of motion there seems to be a tightness.

    Its not excruciating pain, and the pain seems to be specfically in the corner of my shoulder where it meets the chest, rather than on the side of the shoulder, although the pain is more there when I lift the arm.

    It's hard to truly explain because as I am writing this post, I am simultaneously moving my arm and shoulder to test it and the pain comes and goes. I assume it may just be a strain or a rotator cuff tendonitis.

    Any experiences with similar injuries guys? Any recovery tips aside from rest and ice/heat? Stretches or other physio stuff would be helpful. I can't afford to be out of the gym for any extended period...Thanks.

    Go see a doctor, sounds like it could be a repetitive/stress injury. More than likely the only thing you can do it rest it so you'll be forced to take time out of the gym. If its inflamed, then ice it as well.

      It depends on how much intense training you do? If its just strained just ice/hot packs and rest it, BUT do not baby it either. Do you do any stretches AFTER you lift and BEFORE you go to bed???

        Rest your shoulder.

        Stretch before workouts.

        Find a lighter and softer heavybag to work on.

        I'll bet that you f'd it up throwing right hooks, if you're orthodox.

        Had that happen many times through the years, although always on my hooking shoulder (left shoulder).

        If what I stated does not sound valid than I would recommend simply amputating the arm/shoulder.

            Well I train pretty much every day, maybe 1 or 2 rest days a week maximum. And when it's boxing training days that is Tuesday for 3 hours, 3 hours sparring on a Thursday, track running on Saturday and occasionally some more technical work...Monday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday is for lifting or working on my own drills outside of the boxing club.

            This particular day I was doing intense rounds of bag work plus shadow boxing, so I must have overextended or overworked the shoulder when throwing right hands.

            In terms of stretches, I stretch mainly before and during, a bit afterwards, but before going to bed I neglect it often.

              Don't stretch during your workout, you will lose whatever you may have gained and the rest of your work out will be flat.

                I don't stretch to the same degree as when I am preparing for a workout, it's more when I just need to stretch out a muscle if it gets a bit sore or cramped during the exercise. I'll try to avoid that though to compare how it is without doing that...

                  Yea I remember hearing from a sports scientist that Stretching during workout decreases strength in that muscle (but increases hypotrophy)

                  But IMO it's best to stretch a tight muscle to prevent injury even if it is during a workout

                    you MUST stretch those tense muscles at least for 30 mins BEFORE GOING TO SLEEP. Thats from a martial arts point of view as well. Soft stretching before a work out always helps the muscles "breathe" better during the workout. But stretching before going to sleep will help you out alot.
