My first sparring competition is finally this Sunday

Hey guys, as many of you might know I have my first sparring competition(basically like a fight but it's not going to have any detrimental effect on my amateur career if I start one) on Sunday. I'm going to be competing at lightweight @ 60kg. I have absolutely no idea how the opponent looks like, how old he is, how long has been boxing, anything lol. But I'll try to give my best, I'm gonna try and give everything I have learned. My boxing form, stance was completed actually today and I even learned the right hook today. I'm not sure how to use it in a fight but I'll try my best. My one-two is according to the coach, "Somewhat completed."

Come to think about it when I started sparring I couldn't land a single punch, but after going to a trial to the new gym, the coach there taught me how to block, I thought I could use it if I practice it. So I practiced over and over again going over the one-two with my coach, and finally I'm at the stage where I managed to land 2 or 3 good punches at the guy who beat the living **** out of me. I know 2 or 3 punches is not that good lol

I'm going to go as if it is my first amateur fight, although it's an event to test each other's skills. So I just want to ask if there are any tips you guys can give me on this particular fight. I'm new so I'm not sure what to do before a fight, I read a couple of articles on Expertboxing but I was wondering if there are anything else I must be aware of.

Hopefully I can post a video of the match, and if I can I will start a new thread about it Sorry for the thread being so long.

Thanks, and god bless from Japan.

Don't worry about the guy your fight or what he looks like physically, hes worrying about you. and don't go in there thinking to much. Just be a warrior and what you've learned will come out.

    Good luck.

Don't listen to him, he's an idiot.
You try to improve yourself in any way you can and that is the right attitude.
Either way how did the sparring competition go?

it's like an interclub spar- where there is technically no winner/loser, a kind of toned down fight. bit like pacquiao -vs- mosley i guess!
i've seen a good few in cuba where they use them to keep everyone real sharp. in fact some of the best ones are the international ones where they have a visiting team over to train with them and then a "sparring competition" or "tope". the under 18's cuba -vs- russia i saw in 2008 (maybe early 2009) was some of the best boxing i've ever seen.

this is the video i lost in a technical knockout at the final round though. well the sparring competition is basically an exhibition which has no effect on your career, except mine had a win/loss.

the sad thing is, i couldn'T show my coach anything i have learned, i was like a heavybag. i couldn't throw any punches because of nervousness and the guy believe or not had a more tremendous punch than the guy who beat me up.

                  competing at lightweight @ 132lbs
                  me: red corner, 16 yr/old
opponent: blue corner, 21 yr/old. i think he had slightly more experience than me.

i guess entering the practice fight was a good experience for me :-/

You know. Watching you spar again. I don't think mid-range boxing is for you. You just don't have the reflexes for it. I'm thinking your an in-fighter. Or that infighting would be better for you to adapt to boxing.

Next time, try throwing hooks. Stay in your guard and get in close. That way you can throw short hooks to the body and head while keeping your guard up the whole time. Like Ippo, your japanese and I know you know what I am talking about.

It's corny but honestly. I think you'd be better off with the peek-a-boo infighting style. You just don't have the reflexes for mid-range boxing. Your still beginning but I think the infighting style would help you adjust and adapt to boxing easier.

I wish I could show you but all I can do is try to explain it the best I can. Good luck and just give it a try in practice. You may like it better than the jab-straight mid-range boxing.
