Half of folks who watched it thought he lost (including the Mexican Press).

Thus the lineal title in Conelo's hands has little value at this time. Whenever someone puts him down though the value will rise once again. He basically has the lineal title hostage. Doesn't matter if it's GGG or someone else.

BTW, Canelo's draw vs GGG was more impressive than his "win" over Cotto. I will give him that.
Agreed, I was shocked Canelo was able to be competitive versus GGG. I had Canelo v Cotto and GGG both draws, it surprised me none Canelo won versus Cotto, fans reaction surprised me accepting it was a genuine victory !

He is lineal though. Or should be. Zsolt Erdei was stripped of his lineal title when he moved away from the division. That happened as soon as he fought at another weight. Applying the same standard to Canelo, he should have been stripped as well and the winner of Golovkin-Jacobs is therefore the correct lineal champion.

Unless of course, that you use one standard for some people (say North Americans) and another for other people (say Europeans).

if pac was the widely recognised number 1 in each division and fought and beat any competitive highly ranked contenders thats all that matters

hardcore fans are able to assess this

promoters use belts and labels , although less so, such as lineal to fool casuals, its why we dont get the fights we want

Canelo being called the lineal champion while avoiding who most saw as the best guy in the division is a perfect example of why people don't care about it. Wgaf about any belt or "title" if holders don't have to defend against the best. As flawed as the alphabet organizations are, at least they have ranking systems and enforced guidelines. The lineal title is beholden to none of that.

According to some purists, ward became the lineal champion when he beat dawson...regardless of it being at smw.
