I see alot of threads slamming the lineal title saying its worthless

Because GGG isn't lineal..if he got it they would throw a damn parade..they praise lesser fighters because the the fighters they support simply are not great..so they praise their mediocre achievements and slam other fighters GREAT achievements

Because nobody can mandate that you defend the lineal belt. The value of a title belt comes from the fact that sanctioning bodies rank fighters from 1 to whatever, and they determine who is worthy of a mandatory defense (usually top 3 contender), or a voluntary defense (usually can't fall out of that organization's top 15 or something, I believe). If you don't meet these conditions, then they strip you like the WBC did to Canelo... But, notice how he kept the lineal title? There is no ranking for the lineal belt, and it's just an accomplishment that gets passed on from fighter to fighter. And if a lineal champ retires or move up in weight, it's based on completely subjective criteria who begins the next "lineage." Just another meaningless trinket in an era of meaningless trinkets.

Who says he wasn't able to get? Ring? They don't run boxing and they aren't the great decider of things. Oscar promotes Canelo and he owns Ring. That's a big fat conflict of interest. In fact when promoter Oscar purchased Ring they lost all credibility.To me the lineal champion is the man generally recognized as the true champion of the world. When Cotto and Canelo refused to fight GGG and started fighting for the middleweight title at catchweights of 157 and 155 it cost them credibility. When Canelo refused to defend his WBC world title against GGG after the WBC ordered him to he was no longer recognized as the middleweight champion of the world by anyone but his promoter and his magazine. When damn near anybody is asked who is the true middleweight champion of the world they will answer GGG. They won't answer Saunders or Canelo. That's lineal enough for me.

The lineal title is still worthy. Canelo's shenanigans have de-valued his lineal title ... what with the catchweights, coming in fight night at 170 - 180 lbs, etc. Plus his "win" for the lineal title over Cotto was very suspect. Half of folks who watched it thought he lost (including the Mexican Press).

Thus the lineal title in Conelo's hands has little value at this time. Whenever someone puts him down though the value will rise once again. He basically has the lineal title hostage. Doesn't matter if it's GGG or someone else.

BTW, Canelo's draw vs GGG was more impressive than his "win" over Cotto. I will give him that.

The truth is that what Canelo did with GGG last year - handing over his WBC title to avoid a fight then saying "I'm still the lineal MW champ doe"- highlighted the fact that lineal titles have no merit or substance.

They would have merit and substance if there was an overarching governing body in boxing who could have looked at that situation and told Canelo "Sorry son ... but you're not the lineal MW champ any more"

Well put.The situation you describe there is the reason why people are questioning the validity of lineal title claims. The fact that GGG was the man being avoided is irrelevant.

Pretty sure Stevenson did all he could to put the lineal title in the worse light as possible. But guys like you will defend him because he holds some title that doesn't exist physically because he beat a washed up bum in Dawson and then never fought a damn soul at 175. He was probably considered the 3rd best fighter at his weight but he's the "lineal" champ...whatever
